Balkholme History
BALKHOLME is a small village and township, 3 ½ miles east from Howden. The trustees of the late Thomas Stephen Whitaker esq. are lords of the manor and lay impropriators of the tithe, amounting to £148; Col. Philip Saltmarshe R.A., J.P. is the principal landowner. The soil is sandy; subsoil, sand and clay. The chief crops are oats, wheat and barley. The acreage is 1,059; rateable value, £668; the population in 1911 was 76.
