ST. ANNE is the only parish, and is in the deanery of Guernsey and diocese of Winchester. The town, which is irregularly built, is in the centre of the island. It is supplied with gas by the Alderney Gas Light Co. Limited. The water supply is derived from springs.
Braye harbour, 1 ½ miles north of the town, is protected on the north-west by a breakwater, begun 1847, and about half a mile in length.
The Admiralty pier, commencing under the tower of Fort Grosnez, which protects the harbour on the west, is built on an artificial embankment of rubble stone, and is 1,609 yards in length; the parapet on the sea side is 14 feet wide, and 21 feet above high water of ordinary spring tides. Inside the parapet is a quay, 25 feet wide and 6 feet above high-water mark.
The pier, now (1903) completed, lies to the south, of the breakwater, and is about 450 feet long: it is used for loading granite, which is brought here direct from the quarries island, and in which a considerable trade is now done.
Fort Albert, which commands the harbour on the east, was built in 1853, and is occupied by a detachment of the 2nd Leicester regiment; Surg.-Capt. E. W. Livesey, medical officer in charge.
The church of St. Anne, originally Norman, was rebuilt in 1850, from designs by the late Sir G.
