Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
At Rokesac or Ruxox, a hamlet in the parish of Flitwick, about three miles south from Ampthill, there was formerly a small monastery, which appears to have been a cell to Dunstable.
The chapel of St. Nicholas de Rokesac, was founded by Philip de Sannerville, about the year
1470, and dedicated by Robert de Chesney, bishop of Lincoln.
William Earl of Albermarle, and Hawin his wife, granted the site of Rokesac to the canons of Dunstable and the canons of Rokesac. There are at present no remains of the conventual buildings. The site is moated.
FLITWICK is a village and parish, bounded on the south by the Flitt, a tributary of the Ouse, with a station on the Midland railway, and is 3 miles south from Ampthill and 10 south from Bedford, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Redbornestoke, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Ampthill, rural deanery of Ampthill, archdeaconry of Bedford and diocese of Ely. The church of SS. Peter and Paul is a small edifice of stone, in the Gothic style, restored and enlarged in 1858, and further improved in 1867, under the direction of Mr. W. Butterfield, architect: it consists of chancel, nave, aisles and an embattled tower containing 5 bells: on the north side is a Norman doorway; there are five memorial windows, one of which was erected in 1880 to the late Mrs. Brooks, another was placed in 1885 by E. Jenkins esq. to his wife, and a third in 1898 to the Rev. F. Ashpitel, vicar, 1880—94; the oak reredos, erected in 1897, is a memorial to Mrs. J. H. Brooks: the organ was presented by the late Mrs. Brooks: the chancel was new-roofed in 1888, at the expense of Major Brooks J.P.
The register dates from the year 1661. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £207, including 45 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Major Brooks, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Frederick Bell Lipscomb M.A. of St. Edmund Hall, Oxford. There is a Church Mission House, licensed by the Bishop, at Denel End, and an Iron Room at East End. There is a Wesleyan chapel at Denel End. A charity of £9 10s. yearly, arising from land, is distributed in fuel: another charity, amounting to about £31 yearly and described as the “Town Lands Charity,” is in part expended in fuel for the poor and the surplus is devoted to the apprenticing of lads or providing them with outfits. Flitwick Manor House, the seat of Major John Hatfield Brooks D.L., J.P. is a mansion of brick, in a well-wooded and picturesque park containing a fine sheet of ornamental water. Major Brooks, who is lord of the manor, and the Duke of Bedford are the principal landowners. The soil is light gravel; subsoil, sand. The chief crops are wheat oats, barley, beans and peas. The land is chiefly arable, comprising 2,159 acres of land and 6 of water; rateable value, £6,317; the population in 1891 was 900.
