Historical Description

STUDHAM is a parish on the Herts border of the county, 5 miles south from Dunstable stations on the London and North Western and Great Northern railways, and 6 east from Hemel Hempstead, in the Southern division of the county and hundred of Manshead, in the petty sessional division, union and county court district of Luton, rural deanery of Dunstable, archdeaconry of Bedford and diocese of Ely. The parish was formerly partly in Hertfordshire, but under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1888” (section 54), by an Order of the Local Government Board, dated Sept. 30th, 1897, the whole is now in Bedfordshire. The church of St. Mary, consecrated in 1220, is an edifice of mixed styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a western embattled tower containing 4 bells: the chancel is Decorated, the arcades of the nave Early English: the windows are mostly Decorated and Perpendicular: the font is circular, and has a broad band of foliage at the base: the bowl is surrounded with figures of dragons and foliage: the roof of the south aisle was restored in 1876, and in 1893 a new pulpit and lectern of Cornish serpentine granite were placed in the church, a new roof added, and the interior renovated, re-floored and re-seated at a cost of £1,200. The register dates from the year 1570. The living is a vicarage, average net yearly value £210, including 7 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1890 by the Rev. Arthur Anderson M.A. of Balliol College, Oxford. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. Here is a common, comprising several acres of land, on which the poor have the privilege of cutting furze for fuel. The late Countess of Bridgwater left £10 yearly for educational purposes, now applied to the Church of England Sunday and day school. Earl Brownlow P.C. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is gravel and clay; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The area is 3,033 acres; rateable value, £2,176; the population in 1891 was 376.
