Historical Description

BASILDON is a village and parish on the river Thames, which is here crossed by a bridge of four arches, on the line of the Great Western railway, and erected at a cost of £25,000; the village is 2 ¾ miles south-east from Goring station, on the Great Western railway, and 8 north-west from Reading, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Moreton, union of Bradfield, petty sessional division and county court district of Reading, rural deanery of Wallingford, archdeaconry of Berks and diocese of Oxford. The church of St. Bartholomew, supposed to have been, erected in the reign of Edward II. (1307—27) is a building of flint with stone dressings, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western tower of brick, with pinnacles, and containing a clock and 4 bells; in the chancel is a monument to Sir Francis Sykes bart. of Basildon Park, M.P. in five parliaments for Wallingford, d. 11th Jan. 1804, and another to his grandson, Sir Francis William Sykes M.A. d. 6th April, 1843; there are other memorials to Henry Hood, d. 22 May, 1680; Richard Cobb, gent. d. 16 Feb. 1689, and Joan, his wife; the Rev. Robert Bailey Fisher M.A. vicar 1814—59, d. 29 Sept. 1859, and Martha, his wife, d. 16 July, 1837; and the Rev. George Ogle M.A. of Purley park, d. 25 June, 1828; on the nave floor is a brass with effigies to John Clerk and Lucy, his wife, 1480; there are memorial windows to Henry Morrison, d. 10 April, 1850, Emily Grant Morrison, d. 25 April, 1854; William Henry Stone esq. of Streatley House, d. 20 June, 1863; and to Sir Francis William Sykes, 4th bart. lieut. 97th regiment, and of the 2nd Life Guards, d. 1 Jan. 1866; the church was thoroughly restored in 1875—6, at a cost of £2,061, when the timber roof, previously ceiled, was opened; the church affords 250 sittings; the churchyard was enlarged about 1882 and contains tombs of the Sykes family and a fine yew tree. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £153, with 18 acres of glebe and residence, in the alternate gift of Miss Morrison and Simeon’s trustees, and held since 1892 by the Rev. George Collett M.A. of Corpus Christi, Cambridge; the vicarage house stands close by the church; both are pleasantly situated near the river, and sheltered by a belt of trees. St. Stephen’s, at Upper Basildon, erected in 1895, is a structure of iron, and affords 220 sittings. Services are conducted by the Vicar of Basildon on alternate Sunday afternoons at 3 p.m. or in the evening at 6. Here is a Congregational chapel. The poor’s land of 8 acres produces £16 yearly. During the progress of excavations for the construction of the Great Western railway a beautiful tesselated Roman pavement was discovered a few inches below the surface, and on an elevated spot not far from the Thames, coins of Vespasian, in good preservation, domestic utensils and several human skeletons, with a Roman sword lying near them, were found. The Grotto, a mansion beautifully situated on a wooded slope, on the south bank of the river, is the seat of Gilbert J. C. Harter esq. Near the village is Basildon House, formerly the seat of Sir Francis Sykes bart. but now the property and in the occupation of Charles Morrison esq. who is lord of the manor and chief landowner; the mansion is a modern building with wings, and has a portico supported on columns of the Corinthian order; the park contains 400 acres and is inclosed within a brick wall. The soil is chalk, loam and gravel; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 3,096 acres of land and 43 of water; rateable value, £10,200; the population in 1891 was 675.

Schools

Endowed, erected in 1858, for 50 children; average attendance, 34; it was endowed by Mr. William Allen with £4 & a cottage, for ten poor children.

Upper Basildon (mixed & infants), erected in 1875 & enlarged in 1884, for about 130 children; average attendance, 100. Services are held in this schoolroom on sundays at 10 a.m. & 2 p.m. & a children’s service is held at 11 a.m.
