Historical Description

BINFIELD is a scattered village and parish 2 ½ miles from the Bracknell station of the London and South Western railway, 3 ½ north-east from Wokingham and 9 ½ east from Windsor, in the Eastern division of the county, petty sessional division of Wokingham, hundred of Cookham, union of Eastihampstead and county court district of Windsor, rural deanery of Maidenhead, archdeaconry of Berks and diocese of Oxford. The parish is supplied with water by the Wokingham District Water Co. The church of All Saints is a building of stone in the Perpendicular or Third Pointed style, and was probably built in the latter part of the reign of Edward II.: it consists of chancel with north aisle, have of four bays, north aisle, south porch, vestry and an embattled western tower, containing 6 bells and a clock: in the chancel is a fine brass, with half-effigy, and inscription ill Norman-French to Walter de Annesfordhe, a former rector, dated 1361: the north aisle was added by subscription and the church re-seated in 1848: in 1859 the north chancel-aisle was added by the late Mrs. Young, the chancel being at the same time restored at the expense of the Ven. James Randall, archdeacon of Berks and late rector, a vestry built, and other alterations made: the east window is stained: there are two memorial windows in the chancel to the family of the late rector; one at the east end of the south aisle to Mrs. Parker, another at the west end to C. Parker esq. and one in the north aisle to Mrs. Young: the pulpit and reading-desk of oak, handsomely carved, date from 1628; attached to the pulpit is a very ancient hour-glass stand of iron, curiously wrought with the arms of the Smiths’ and Farriers’ Companies of the City of London: in 1887 a memorial of the Ven. Archdeacon Randall, rector 1831—59, was added in the form of a beautiful carved oak reredos in three compartments: immediately below the reredos runs a bold altar-shelf of alabaster, carved in high relief with shields and flowers: the walls on either side of the east window are filled with glass mosaics: the ancient piscina in the east wall still remains: the chancel is divided from the body of the church by a screen of light and very graceful ironwork, and similar side screens fill the arches on either side of the chancel: the original copy of Erasmus’ paraphrase on the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles, placed in the church by order of King Edward VI. in 1547, has been replaced and there is a framed list of the rectors from 1300 to 1859 placed in the church by the present rector; the church was restored in 1887 at a cost of £1,400, and affords 625 sittings, of which 220 are free. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £390, including residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1859 by the Rev. Edmund Savory M.A. of Oriel College, Oxford, hon. canon of Christ Church, rural dean of Maidenhead, proctor in Convocation for the diocese of Oxford, and surrogate. St. Mark’s chapel of ease, erected by subscription in 1866, is a building of red brick, with stone facings, in the Early English style, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles and transepts; one aisle was added and the chapel restored in 1875—6, at a cost of over £598 and a reredos of oak was erected in 1897; there are 350 sittings. Here is an undenominational chapel, erected in 1875, with sittings for 150. There is a fuel allotment of 13 acres, producing £10 yearly and charities of £40 a year for distribution. The Working Men’s Club, erected by subscription in 1885, is a substantial building of red brick, comprising large reading and smoking rooms and a library of 500 volumes. Binfield Park House was sold in 1890 to Wiliam Reginald Cookson esq.; the mansion of brick is surrounded by a park of about 300 acres, and is now occupied by William Du Pont esq. Binfield Court is the seat of Frank Davenport Bullock-Webster esq. Forest Lodge, a handsome house surrounded by a park of about 100 acres, is the seat of Sir Warwick Charles Morshead bart. J.P. It was originally one of the hunting lodges of Windsor Great Park. Arthurstone, is the residence of James William Macnabb esq. J.P.; Egmont, of Col. A. Chapman; Farley Copse, of Sir Donald C. Macnabb; Allanbay, of James Allan Wiggett esq. J.P.; and the Grove, of Sir Robert Wilmot bart. A portion of Billingbear Park, the property of Lord Braybrooke, is situated in this parish. Binfield Manor House, now (1899) unoccupied, is in this parish; in 1738 it was held by the Pitt family. The chief manor of Binfield was given up to the Crown in 1548, by Thomas, 2nd Baron Sandys, of the Vine, near Basingstoke and in 1617 was given by James I. to Prince Charles (afterwards Charles I.), for whom it was surveyed by Norden; an inferior manor existed and still exists, of which Henry Skrine esq. is the lord. The manor was formerly included in Windsor Forest, and many fine specimens of the old forest trees still remain on the estate, especially some magnificent oaks and a cedar of extraordinary growth. By the Act of Parliament passed in 1813 for inclosing Windsor Forest, a spring of water, a mile from the manor house, was reserved to the lord of the manor, who still has the sole right to it. The principal landowners are Lord Braybrooke, Samuel Palmer esq. Percy Edward Crutchley esq. of Sunninghill Park, James Allan Wiggett esq. Sir Robert Wilmot bart. William Reginald Cookson esq. and Sir Warwick Charles Morshead bart. The soil is principally gravel and clay; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley.
