Historical Description

CHIEVELEY is a parish and village with the chapelries of Oare and Winterbourne and the tithings of Curridge and Snelsmore, in the Southern division of the County, hundred of Faircross, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Newbury, and in the rural deanery of Newbury, archdeaconry of Berks and diocese of Oxford. Chieveley is on the road from Newbury to Abingdon, 5 miles north from Newbury, 22 from Oxford and 2 north-east from Hermitage station on the Didcot and Newbury branch of the Great Western railway. The church of St. Mary the Virgin is a plain building of rubble stone, partly in the Early English style, with some traces of Norman, and consists of chancel, nave of five bays, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 6 bells: the east windows are stained: in the chancel and at the west end are various memorials to the Pocock family, and other memorials to Lucy Fincher, ob. 22nd March, 1667—8, and Catherine Stephens, d. 12th Oct. 1860; Rev. George Wyld, 48 years rector, d. New Year’s day, 1837; and to Robert Hillman, gent. 1748; on the north side of the chancel remains part of a brass, with a shield of arms: the nave was rebuilt in 1873, from the plans of Mr. J. W. Hugall, architect: in the chancel is an ancient wood frame from which the Lenten veil was anciently suspended: the churchyard, to which half an acre, the gift of W. Fisher esq. was added in the year 1894, is surrounded by elms, affords a fine view of the downs towards the west, and contains a massive tomb to Elizabeth, wife of Charles Long, ob. 1st Jan. 1767, and others to the families of Rathband, Halcomb, Leney, Basing, Preston, and Smallbone, and to Joseph White, 44 years parish clerk, d. 14 June, 1871: there are 340 sittings, 150 being free. The register dates from the year 1560. The living is a consolidated vicarage, net yearly value £1,050, including 220 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Mrs. M. J. Mills, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Richard Andrew Fawssett M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. There are Baptist, Primitive Methodist and Wesleyan chapels. Several bequests and endowments have been left for the poor, amounting to £40 yearly, besides £35 for educational purposes and a church charity producing £75 yearly. Arlington Manor, the seat of the Right Hon. Sir Francis Henry Jeune P.C., K.C.B., D.C.L., M.A., is a fine mansion of stone standing on a slight elevation in the midst of a well-wooded country. Prior’s Court House, the property of the Rev. John Spearman Wasey M.A. of Speen Hill, Newbury, is now occupied by Lionel Barlow esq. M.A. Downend House is the residence of Ernest Edwin Martin-Atkins esq. J.P. The principal landowners are Lord Wantage, K.C.B., V.C., who is also lord of the manor, William George Mount esq. M.P., of Wasing Place, the Right Hon. Sir Francis H. Jeune P.C. William Fisher esq. the Rev. J. S. Wasey M.A. and William Boyes esq. The soil is sandy loam; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The entire area is 9,217 acres; and of Chieveley township, 5,328; assessable value, £4,391; the population in 1891 was 1,020.

Downend, three-quarters of a mile north, is a place in Chieveley.
