CLEWER WITHOUT, anciently Cleworth, is a village and scattered parish, 1 mile west from Windsor, 6 miles south-east from Maidenhead and 23 from London, situated on the banks of the Thames, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of Ripplesmere, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Windsor, rural deanery of Maidenhead, archdeaconry of Berks and diocese of Oxford. The parish was in 1894, under the provisions of section 1 of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), divided into two, Clewer Within and Without, the former being that part of the old parish in Windsor municipal borough. The parish church of St. Andrew is a building of flint and rubble, chiefly in the Early Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and a western tower with broach shingled spire, containing 6 bells; the nave and tower are Norman, but have Decorated and Perpendicular windows in the church is a tablet to Field-Marshal William, 3rd Earl Harcourt G.C.B, who died June 17, 1830. In the lady chapel is a brass, with six verses to Martin Expence, who “shott with 100 men him selfe alone, at ould feild at Bray;” on the chancel floor is a brass to Lucy, daughter of Sir William Wray bart. and wife of John Hobson, gent. ob. 29 May, 1657, and there are two modern brasses to Emma Charlotte, daughter of Admiral Sir Edward Codrington, d. May 13, 1863, and to Maria Elizabeth her sister, d. March 18, 1865; and inscribed slabs to the wife and daughter of John Lovell, 1685—91, and to John Ewen, ob. December 12, 1694, and Elizabeth Ms wife, ob. December 9, 1694; there is a fine marble reredos and a handsome font; all the windows are stained; the church, was restored, in 1858, and in 1884 the spire and lady chapel were restored at a cost of £600; there are about 370 sittings, 50 being free; the churchyard is remarkable for its quiet and secluded beauty and the care with which it is tended; within it rest the remains of not a few soldiers, and many of the immediate retainers of the Royal Household, amongst whom may be named the late Sir Thomas M. Biddulph K.C.B, keeper of Her Majesty’s Privy Purse, who died in 1878; in summer the whole ground is radiant with flowers, and is the resort of many passing pilgrims. The register dates from the year 1650. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £220, with 22 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Eton College, and held since 1880 by the Rev. Roland Errington M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford, and late conduct of Eton College. St. Agnes’ church, at Clewer Green, a chapel of ease to the parish church, is a structure of brick, consisting of chancel and nave, and will seat 150 persons. DEDWORTH is a hamlet of Clewer. All Saints’ chapel of ease is an edifice of red brick, erected in memory of Mrs. Tudor, at the sole cost of her family, and consists of chancel, nave of four bays, south aisle and north porch; all the windows are stained; there are 200 sittings. Here is also a Congregational chapel, with 50 sittings. The area is 347 acres, and the population is included with Clewer. The Parish Hall, erected in 1893, on a site given by the late Sir Henry Daniel Gooch bart. is used for public meetings and entertainments.
Surly Hall, on the Berks banks of the Thames, about half a mile above Boveney lock, is a resort for the Eton College crews during the boating season and for aquatic pleasure parties; in the meadow opposite, the boats’ crews from Eton College assemble and sup at their annual aquatic festival on the 4th of June, the birthday of George III. The Windsor races are held in this parish on a meadow called “The Rays” adjoining the river Thames. There are charities of £53 yearly for distribution in money and kind, and £22 10s. for apprenticing. A Church penitentiary, called the House of Mercy, in connection with the London Church Penitentiary Association, was founded in this parish in 1849 and was subsequently enlarged; about 100 penitents are maintained here; the bishop of the diocese is visitor; the spiritual superintendence is entrusted to clergymen of the Church of England, viz. the warden, Rev. T. T. Carter M.A. and the sub-warden, the Rev. G. S. Cuthbert M.A.; the internal work of the house is carried on by Sisters of Mercy, ladies devoting themselves to it of free service and dwelling in the same house with the penitents who are under their care; the institution is endowed with an estate of 26 acres, but is dependent for its support on the contributions of the sisters and voluntary benefactions of friends; the management of the funds is under the control of a council composed of clergymen and laymen: in 1875 a new wing was opened to the south of the main building for 33 penitents, called “Magdalens,” in addition to the 100 above-mentioned; the Rev. John Noyer Pendlebury M.A. and the Rev. Frederick Thomas Herbert Shepherd M.A. are chaplain-priests in connection with the sisterhood and its works.
