Historical Description

EASTHAMPSTEAD is a village and parish and head of a union, 5 miles east from Wokingham, 9 south-west from Windsor and 29 from London; the Bracknell station of the Staines and Wokingham branch of the South Western railway is situated in this parish, which is in the Eastern division of the county, petty sessional division of Wokingham, hundred of Ripplesmere, county court district of Windsor, rural deanery of Reading, archdeaconry of Berks and diocese of Oxford. Part of the parish is supplied with water by the Wokingham District Water Co. The church of St. Michael and St. Mary Magdalene, built on the site of the old church, and opened in May, 1867 is a building in the Early Continental Gothic style, from designs by Mr. Hugall, architect, and consists of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, south transept, south porch, baptistery and a square tower with four pinnacles containing 6 bells: the south transept belongs to the Hill family: the windows are stained, and include one in the north aisle to Caroline Frances, late Dowager Marchioness of Downshire, d. 10 May, 1893, and Devonshire marble has been freely introduced in the decorative work of the interior: the chancel fittings are of oak, and a sedile is formed on the north side by the elongation of the window sill; double sedilia occupy the south window; the communion table is of oak; the pulpit, on a stone base, is composed of portions of that fixed in the old church in 1631; in 1876 a stained east window, designed by the late Sir Edward C. Burne-Jones bart. was inserted as a memorial to Arthur (Hill) Marquess of Downshire, who died 31st March, 1874: the roof was re-tiled in 1898: an ancient yew tree of very remarkable growth, which stands by the church, measures 63 feet in circumference: there are 340 sittings, of which 200 are free. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, net income £375, including 93 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Christ Church, Oxford, and held since 1883 by the Rev. Herbert Salwey M.A. late senior student of that house, rural dean of Reading and chaplain to Easthampstead union. The chapel of ease at Priestwood (also used as a school) was erected in 1888, at a cost of £781, and is an edifice of Ted brick, with an apse; it will seat 150, and is served by the rector and curate. There is also a parish room. The Primitive Methodist chapel at Priestwood has sitting's for 60 persons. The fuel allotment has been sold, and the amount invested produces £60 yearly for coals; there are various charities, amounting together to £80 yearly for distribution. Here are remains of a Roman camp. Easthampstead Park is the seat of the Marquess of Downshire: the mansion is a spacious building of brick and stone, in the Elizabethan style, and stands in a park upwards of 650 acres in extent. This park once contained a royal residence, inhabited by Richard II. in 1381, and Queen Catherine of Aragon, in 1531; James I. was also a visitor here in 1622 and 1623. South Hill Park, the seat of the Rt. Hon. Sir Arthur Divett Hayter bart. P.C., M.A., D.L., J.P. is a compact residence of brick, standing in a park of 800 acres, with four lakes; the private gardens, laid out in terraces, are very beautiful. The principal landowners are the Crown, the Marquess of Downshire, who is lord of the manor, and the Rt. Hon. Sir A. D. Hayter bart. P.C. The soil is gravel and sand; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat and oats. The area is 5,285 acres of land, of which 1,000 acres or more are heath, the property of the Crown, and 10 of water; rateable value, £7,351; the population in 1878 was 884, and in 1881, 1,172, and in 1891, 1,418.

National School (mixed & infants), built by the late Marquess of Downshire & other landed proprietors & attended by the children from the workhouse; the school will hold 239 children; average attendance, 170; infants’, Priestwood, for 120 children; average attendance, 80.

EASTHAMPSTEAD UNION

The Union comprises the following places:-Binfield, Easthampstead, Sandhurst, Warfield & Winkfield. The population of the union in 1891 was 13,717; assessable value in 1898, £65,469.

The Workhouse, a red brick building, was originally built by William Watts esq. of South Hill, as almshouses in 1760, & enlarged & converted into a Union Workhouse by the Marquess of Downshire in 1826, & further enlarged in 1889, again in 1898 to hold about 200.
