Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
HURST (or St. Nicholas Hurst) is a parish about 7 miles long, and consists of the liberties of Broad Hinton, Whistley-in-Hurst, Winnersh and Newland; the latter liberty, with a great part of Winnersh, has been formed into the ecclesiastical district of St. Catherine, Bearwood, and the hamlet of Twyford with an adjacent district was formed into a separate ecclesiastical parish April 4th, 1876, and a civil parish June 23rd, 1895. Whistley-in-Hurst is 6 miles east from Reading, 2 south from the Great Western railway station at Twyford, 7 ¾ south from Henley, 4 north from Wokingham and 10 from Maidenhead, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of Charlton, petty sessional division and union, of Wokingham, county court district of Reading, rural deanery of Sonning, archdeaconry of Berks and diocese of Oxford. The church of St. Nicholas is a building of stone in the Transitional and later styles, consisting of chancel, with south aisle (added in 1876), nave and a south porch, aisles and an embattled western tower, rebuilt in 1612, and containing a clock and 6 bells: the chancel is separated from the nave and aisle by a screen of elaborately carved oak, surmounted by the Royal arms and Prince of Wales’s plume, richly gilt; five large pillars with arches of various dates, from the 12th century downwards, form the arcade to the north aisle, and three arches in the Middle-Pointed style separate the south aisle from the nave; the pulpit is of carved oak in the Jacobean style, and there is a splendid marble monument, of the 17th century, to Lady Margaret, widow of Sir Henry Savile kt. provost of Eton and founder of the Savilian professorships of astronomy and geometry at Oxford; it has six marble figures in the attitude of prayer, under a canopy with drapery, supported on each side by an angel, the whole of exquisite workmanship; there is also a brass to Richard Waude, “aulae proquestor” to Henry VIII., Edward VI., and Queens Mary and Elizabeth, ob. 1574; his wife, Colubra, and 17 children, with effigies and 14 verses; and another brass to Alice, eldest daughter of Richard Ward esq. “cooferer” to Queen Elizabeth, and wife of Thomas Harrison esq. ob. c. 1600; this brass has her effigy in a bed, she having died in childbed; in 1876 and 1885 the whole church was restored at the expense of Miss Palmer, of Sonning, at a cost of £4,000; in the south aisle is a memorial window presented by the family of the late T. R. Harman esq. of Sindlesham; the stained east window is a memorial to the Rev. Archibald Allen Cameron M.A. vicar 1832-80, and in 1893 a memorial window was erected to Mrs. Cameron: there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1583. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £276, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Oxford, and held since 1880 by the Rev. Edmund Broome M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. There is a Baptist chapel at Broad Hinton, with sittings for 70 persons. There are almshouses, founded in 1682 by William Barker esq. of Hurst, for eight poor people, with a donation to them and their successors for ever of 7s. 6d. weekly, besides a new coat or gown every second year. The other chief benefactors to the parish are the following: Mr. Richard Bigg, formerly fellow of New College, Oxford, who in 1677 left three freehold houses and a warehouse in London, now producing £220 yearly; Lady Dorothy Harrison, whose charity yields £22 yearly; Lady Frances Winchcomb; William Harman esq. who by his will left the interest of £500 to be annually distributed in coal among the poor of the liberty of Winnersh, the amount being now about £18; Mrs. Sarah Glasspool, who left £200, the interest of which, now £6 a year, is expended in flannels and blankets for the poor of the liberty of Whistley; and Alice Allright, who left £8 a year for the poor of Newland liberty. The fuel allotments of the liberty of Newland have been sold and the purchase money, £390, invested; the interest is yearly distributed in fuel. There is also the Hooten and Pooley bequest of £44 yearly, for the benefit of the inmates of Barker’s almshouses; and two other charities, founded by George William Barker esq. for educational purposes and for the purchase of coals for the poor, and amounting together to £19 yearly; besides which there are some smaller bequests. The charities are now administered under a scheme of the Charity Commissioners, the total income being about £530. Lord Braybrooke is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are the trustees of the late John Edward Leveson-Gower esq. of Bill Hill, Wokingham (d. 1892), and Thomas Colleton Garth esq. of Broad Hinton. The soil is mostly loam and gravel; subsoil, gravel and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area of the entire parish is 6,801 acres of land and 97 of water; rateable value, £21,959; the population in 1891 was 1,333.
National Schools (boys, girls & infants); the boys' school was erected in 1881; the schools will unitedly hold 290 children; average attendance, 75 boys, 72 girls & 76 infants.
