Historical Description

RUSCOMBE is a village and parish, one mile from the Great Western railway station at Twyford, 6 miles east from Reading, 5 south from Henley and 6 ½ west from Maidenhead, in the Eastern division of the county, union and petty sessional division of Wokingham, hundred of Sonning, county court district of Reading, rural deanery of Sonning, archdeaconry of Berks and diocese of Oxford. The church of St. James, repaired and restored in 1859 and 1860 and again thoroughly restored in 1879 and 1880, at a cost of £1,322, is an edifice of flint and brick, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 2 bells: the chancel appears to be of the early 12th century: the nave and tower were rebuilt in 1639: the interior is plain and contains monuments to several members of the Braybrooke family: there are 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1590. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £155, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Oxford, and held since 1864 by the Rev. John Henly M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. Ruscombe Southbury is a prebend in Salisbury Cathedral. A portion of the mansion and grounds of Stanlake Park, the property of Frederick Barker esq. of Hook, Winchfield, and occupied by Mrs. Heydemann, is in this parish and part in the parish of Hurst. Thomas Colleton Garth esq. of Haines Hill, Broad Hinton, is the chief landowner. The soil is mostly gravel; subsoil, gravel and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,249 acres; rateable value, £8,127; the population in 1891 was 349.
