Historical Description

At Steventon, about six miles from Farnborough, there was formerly an alien priory of black monks, a cell to the abbey of Bec Harlewin in Normandy, to which monastery the manor had been given by King Henry I. It was afterwards granted to the abbot and convent of Westminster.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

STEVENTON is a parish on the road from Abingdon to Newbury, with a station on the Great Western railway, 56 ½ miles from London and 4 miles south-south-west from Abingdon by road, 11 ½ by rail, in the Northern division of the county, hundred of Ock, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Abingdon, rural deanery of Abingdon, archdeaconry of Berks and diocese of Oxford. The church of St. Michael and All Angels, is a building of stone in the Early English and later styles, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle and an embattled tower on the south side containing 6 bells: on the south side of the nave are two arches of unequal span, one Early English, the other Decorated; the tower arches are good Decorated, with richly moulded imposts and curious and rich carving; the windows are chiefly Decorated and Perpendicular: there is an unusually ornamented piscina in the chancel of the latter period, and stone sedilia in the south wall: the font is also Perpendicular: the east window is stained, and there are two memorial windows on the north side of the chancel to the Rev. William Harley M.A. ten years vicar of this parish, who died May 11th, 1870, and to two former members of the choir: there are about 400 sittings. In the churchyard is a stone cross, restored in 1836. The earliest register in possession of the parish dates from the year 1558 only, but there is an earlier register, dating from 1553 to 1559, now in the British Museum, and forming No. 2,395 in the Harleian collection of MSS. The living is a vicarage, net income £280, with 3 4/2 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Westminster, and held since 1887 by the Rev. Augustine Lempriere Foulkes M.A. of Queen’s College, Oxford, and rural dean of Abingdon. The Wesleyan Methodist chapel is a small structure of brick, with stone dressings in the Gothic style, and was built in 1861. A Volunteer Fire Brigade was established in 1831 and is supported by voluntary contributions. In this parish was once a Benedictine priory, founded by Henry I. and dependent on the abbey of Bec, in Normandy, to which house the king had given the manor. There is an ancient causeway running throughout the entire length of the village, planted with trees on both sides, and kept in repair by a trust fund bequeathed for that purpose. The charities belonging to the parish amount to about £90 yearly, of which the Causeway charity producing about £40 yearly, is expended on maintaining and lighting the causeway; under a scheme of the Charity Commissioners in 1892, nine trustees are appointed; £10 is applied for educational purposes by granting prizes or paying sums not exceeding £3 each for encouraging attendance at school; the remaining income is to be expended in temporary relief in food, clothes or money at the discretion of the trustees. The Smallbones, an ancient family, resided here for some time and recorded their pedigree in the visitation of 1664—6. The principal landowners are the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, who are lords of the manor, Messrs. William Tyrrell and Richard Hopkins Betteridge. The soil is rich loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans and turnips. The area is 2,394 acres of land and 7 of water; rateable value, £9,968; the population in 1891 was 878.

National School (mixed & infants), established in 1864, enlarged 1871, for 170 children; average attendance, 180; the building was designed by the late G. E. Street esq. R.A.
