Historical Description

In the parish Church of Warfield are several monuments of the Stavertons, who anciently possessed estates in this parish. At New Bracknel a hamlet in this parish, there are three annual fairs, on the days mentioned in our list.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

WARFIELD is an extensive parish 2 miles from the Bracknell station on the London and South Western railway, 5 north-east from Wokingham and 9 south-west from Windsor, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of Wargrave, Wokingham petty sessional division, union of Easthampstead, county court district of Windsor, rural deanery of Maidenhead, archdeaconry of Berks and diocese of Oxford. Portions of the parish were assigned to the consolidated chapelry of Bracknell, October 24th, 1851. The church of St. Michael and All Angels is an ancient building of stone in the Early English style, of which it is considered a fine specimen; it consists of chancel, nave of four bays, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells; the church was thoroughly restored in 1876 under the direction of the late G. E. Street esq. R.A. at a cost of about £3,000, raised by subscription; the interior is relieved by a very handsome carved oak screen with delicate tracery; it contains also a monument to Sir John Benn Walsh bart. of Ormathwaite, Cumberland, who died June 7, 1825, and several other fine monuments of some antiquity: there are 270 sittings. The churchyard was wholly closed against interments January 1, 1867; a new portion was added to the burial ground in 1887. Of the early register, dating from 1666, only copies now exist, the originals having been destroyed by fire in 1833. The living is a vicarage, net income £110, with 16 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of and held since 1888 by the Rev. Benjamin Campbell Littlewood M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford; the vicarage house was erected in 1862. There is an undenominational chapel at Moss End, belonging to the Fifield mission. The 61 acres of fuel allotment have been sold and the invested funds produce about £60 yearly for fuel; a sum of £30 from several charities is also distributed. Warfield Park is occupied by the Hon. Arthur Henry John Walsh; the mansion, of brick, is surrounded by an extensive and beautiful park. Warfield Grove, a plain brick house standing in a park of some extent, is occupied by Sir George Pigot bart. Warfield Hall, a pleasant brick-built residence with a park of about 160 acres, is the seat of General Sir Charles Henry Brownlow G.C.B. Lord Braybrooke, who is lord of the manor. Lord Ormathwaite and Lady Brownlow are the principal landowners. The soil is clay and gravel; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 3,423 acres of land and 12 of water; rateable value, £11,833; the population in 1891, including the district of Bracknell, which is principally situated in this parish, was 2,273; the population of Warfield only is 873.

National School (mixed), built for 150 children; average attendance, 108.
