Historical Description

WINTERBOURNE is a chapelry in the parish of Chieveley, 2 ¼ south-west of Chieveley and 4 north-west from Newbury. The church of St. James, seated on an eminence, is an edifice of flint with stone dressings, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower of brick, containing 2 bells: in the church is a monument of marble, with arms, to Philip Weston esq. ob. June 9, 1729, and on the floor are memorials to the Southby, Head, Spear and Prior families: the church was completely restored and reseated and enlarged by the addition of aisles in 1854, and has now 150 sittings, all being free. The principal landowners are the trustees of the late Sir Matthew Baillie Begbie kt. M.A. Chief Justice of British Columbia (d. 1894), Richard Fisher esq. Marmaduke Head Best esq. D.L., J.P. of Donnington, and Charles Thatcher and Benjamin J. Hudson esqrs. The area is 2,112 acres; assessable value, £1,358; the population in 1891 was 270.
