Historical Description

Witham or Wightham, in the hundred of Hornier, a, small decayed village, where in ancient times there was a nunnery, originally founded at Abingdon by the sister of King Ceadwall, and afterwards removed hither. It was deserted by the nuns during the war between Offa, king of the Mercians, and Kinewulf, king of the West Saxons, in consequence of a castle having been built at Witham. The nunnery was never afterwards inhabited.

The village is situated at the foot of a hill, on the summit of which the vestiges of the castle above-mentioned are still to be discovered. The battle, through which Offa became master of this fortress, appears to have been fought at a place called Sandfield, in the neighbourhood, where, according to Hearne, in his Liber Niger, armour, swords, and human bones, have been found.

Witham Church is a small building, with a boarded roof, supported by three wooden arches. Against the wall on each side the nave is a series of grotesque ornaments in stone, resembling human heads, with caps similar to these worn by canons regular of the order of St. Augustine.

In the north window, near the west end of the nave, are the portraits of Edward II. and his Queen, supposed to have been placed there by some pilgrims, when travelling to the monarch’s shrine at Gloucester. The king is represented with a curled beard, the hair divided and hanging on each side the chin. Each is covered with an open crown fleury.

In this village is an ancient mansion, belonging to the Earl of Abingdon, erected in the reign of Henry VI. by Sir Richard Harcourt, soon after he became possessed of the manor. It is a stone fabric within a moat. It has an embattled tower in the centre, surmounted by two octangular turrets. The hall remains in its original state, and the vestiges of its former splendor are still apparent.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

WYTHAM is a parish and village, bounded on three sides by the Isis, 3 miles north-west from Oxford, in the Northern division of the county, hundred of Hormer, petty sessional division and union of Abingdon, county court district of Oxford, rural deanery of Abingdon, archdeaconry of Berks and diocese of Oxford. The village is situated at the foot of a hill, on the summit of which was a castle, supposed to have been built by Kinewulf, king of the West Saxons, during his wars with Offa, king of the Mercians, who, after it had fallen into his hands, made it his residence; the battle through which Offa obtained possession of it was fought traditionally at a place called “Sandfield,” in which neighbourhood Hearne, in his “Liber Niger,” says that armour, swords and human bones have been found. The church of All Saints, first built by the monks of Abingdon abbey about 1480, was rebuilt in 1811 by Montagu, 5th Earl of Abingdon (d. 16 Oct. 1854), who removed here and most carefully incorporated in the new structure and its surroundings some of the very interesting fragments of old Cumnor Hall; the present building is of stone in the Early English style, and consists of chancel, nave, north porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 3 bells: on the south side are three windows of the Late Decorated period, brought from old Cumnor Hall; in the church are brass effigies of a man in armour and his wife, c. 1455, but much mutilated; the inscription is lost, but the figures are supposed to represent either Richard de Wygtham and Alice (Daunsey) his wife, or her daughter Agnes and her husband William Browning; there is also a monument to Edward Purcell, gentleman usher to Charles II. and brother of Henry Purcell, the distinguished musical composer; the east window is stained and the windows on the north side retain glass roundels of Perpendicular date, figures of the Virgin and Saints, and some symbols; the porch is Late Perpendicular; the doorway of the west wall of the churchyard was removed here from Cumnor and has above it the legend “IANVA VITAE VERBVM DOMINI;” another doorway bears the date “MCCCLXXII,” but this is of doubtful accuracy; there are 120 sittings, half being free. The Rev. the Hon. Henry William Bertie D.C.L., V.D. and senior fellow of All Soul’s College, who died 31 Dec. 1894, was buried here, 3 Jan. 1895. The register dates from the year 1557. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £130, including 16 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Earl of Abingdon, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Charles Winship, of St. Aidan’s. Wytham Abbey, the mansion of the Earl of Abingdon, originally erected about the reign of Henry VI. is now chiefly in the Elizabethan style, but the interior has been much modernized; the gate-house in the centre of the front and the hall are, however, fine specimens of ancient work; the drawingroom retains fragments of stained glass displaying the badges of the Tudors, probably brought from Cumnor: the walls of the various apartments are hung with valuable pictures, chiefly family portraits, and including James Stewart, 4th Duke of Lennox and 1st Duke of Richmond K.G. of that family d. 1655, by Vandyke; Willoughby Bertie, 4th Earl of Abingdon, d. 1854, by Gainsborough, and his Countess Charlotte (Warren), d. 1794, by George Dance R.A.; a splendid family group, by Hyacinthe Rigaud, and a portrait of Henry, Prince of Wales, eldest son of James I. d. 1612. Wytham Wood extends over 700 acres and is delightfully intersected by drives and grassy paths. The Earl of Abingdon is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is various; subsoil, clay, sand and limestone. The chief crops are a succession of grain and grass. The area is 1,163 acres of land and 16 of water; ratable value, £1,783; the population in 1891 was 225 in the civil and 248 in the ecclesiastical parish.

National School, erected in 1855, & enlarged 1893, for 100 children; average attendance, 45.
