Historical Description
BLEDLOW is a parish, on the borders of Oxfordshire, with a station one mile north of the village, on the Wycombe, Aylesbury, Thame and Oxford branch of the Great Western railway, 44 miles from London, 2 ½ miles west-south-west from Princes Risborough and 5 ½ east-south-east from Thame, in the Mid division of the county, in the hundred of Aylesbury, petty sessional division of Desborough second division, union of Wycombe, county court district of High Wycombe, rural deanery of Aylesbury, archdeaconry of Buckingham and diocese of Oxford. The Princes Risborough and Watlington railway passes through. The church of the Holy Trinity, restored in 1876 at a cost of £1,400, is an ancient structure of flint and stone, in the Transition Norman style with Decorated windows and clerestory added, and consists of chancel, clerestoried nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and a western tower containing 5 bells: the inner doorway of the south porch is very fine, consisting of a pointed arch with small circular shafts of Early English date; on the right of this door there is an unusually large holy-water stoup; over the outer door is a dial and near the entrance the stone base of an ancient cross: the north aisle contains a canopied niche and a double piscina, and the south aisle has also a piscina and retains traces of two recessed tombs: in the chancel is a brass of a former vicar (1525) in Eucharistic vestments: the walls of the nave and aisles bear traces of some ancient paintings: the font is of Norman date, elaborately carved, and there are several tablets of the early part of the last century to members of the Blancks family: since 1895 a new chancel screen, altar table and litany desk, all executed by Mr. Harry Hems, of Exeter, and four stained windows have been provided: there are 211 sittings: the churchyard is bounded on the east by a deep and woody glen, into which several springs of water fall, and uniting, form a small lake called “The Lyde,” in which large quantities of watercress are grown for the London markets. The register dates from the year 1592. The living is a discharged vicarage, net yearly value £110, including 134 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Earl Carrington, and held since 1895 by the Rev. John Frederick Stephen Pritchitt, of Charsleys Hall, Oxford. There is a small Wesleyan chapel here, and another at Bledlow Ridge. The school of the Wycombe union, occupying what was formerly the workhouse, is here: there are four acres of land adjoining the school, which are cultivated by the boys, and the girls do most of the domestic work. The charities produce £62 yearly, inclusive of rent for the poors land of 35 acres for fuel; the principal testators have been-Henry Smith in 1608, John Blanoks in 1671, Marg. Babham in 1672, and Edmund Slaughter in 1831. On a lofty hill in this parish is a Greek cross, cut into the turf, and similar to that at Whiteleaf in Monks Risborough, and is said to have been cut by the Saxons to commemorate a victory over the Danes. Earl Carrington and the Provost and Fellows of Eton College are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are Earl Carrington P.C., G.C.M.G. Eton College, James Britnell esq. and Messrs. Gibbons and Alfred Crouch. The soil is in some parts chalk loam, other parts stiff clay; subsoil, chalk, or ragstone and clay. The chief crops are wheat, beans, peas and barley. The area is 4,112 acres; assessable value, £4,187; the population of the civil parish in 1891 was 978, which includes Bledlow Ridge, Pitch Green, half a mile north Rout’s Green 2 ½ miles south Forty Green, 1 ½ north-west, Skittle Green, three-quarters of a mile north-west, and Holly Green, 1 north and of the ecclesiastical, 580.

The parish Church of Bledlow, about three miles south-west from Prince’s Risborough, on the borders of Oxfordshire, is a specimen of the earliest Gothic architecture, and contains some memorials of the family of Crosse, who had a seat in the parish, and held the rectorial manor under the provost and fellows of Eton College, to whom the rectory was appropriated in 1444.
The church stands near the edge of a rock, under which, in a deep glen, overgrown with trees, issue some transparent springs which contribute to form a pond called the Lyde. These springs are said to wear away the rocks, which has occasioned the following local proverb:
“They who live and do abide,
Shall see Bledlow Church fall into the Lyde.”
