Historical Description
BLETCHLEY is a parish, village and railway station 1 mile west from Fenny Stratford, 12 ½ miles east from Buckingham, 6 ½ south from Newport Pagnell and 46 ½ from London, in the Northern division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Newport Pagnell, rural deanery of Bletchley, archdeaconry of Buckingham and diocese of Oxford. About half a mile from the village, but in the parish of Fenny Stratford, is Bletchley station on the London and North Western railway, being the junction of the Bedford and Cambridge and the Banbury and Oxford branches with the main line. The parish comprises the township of Bletchley with the hamlet of Water Raton. The parish is supplied with water from Brickhillton, the Fenny Stratford water works. Bletchley was, in 1898, added to the Urban District of Fenny Stratford. The church of St. Mary, approached through a fine avenue of very ancient yews, is an edifice of stone, mostly in the Perpendicular style, some portions, however, being as early as the 12th century; it consists of a large chancel with north aisle, forming a chantry of the Grey de Wilton family, clerestoried nave of four bays, aisles, south porch, and a fine embattled western tower containing a clock and 8 bells, one of which was recast in 1868, and in 1893 the entire peal underwent renovation at a total cost of £125, the tenor bell, weighing 18 cwt. being recast: a part of the ceiling of the chancel, which is in twelve compartments, is painted and ornamented with portraits of the Apostles; the remainder over the sacrarium consists of a “Tetragrammaton” in a triangle surrounded by cherubs: the church was restored by Dr. Browne Willis, in 1704, at a cost of £1,345, in accordance with the prevailing taste, but quite out of character with the style of the building: in the chancel are four early sedilia, all of which, hidden by the restoration of 1704, have since been uncovered: the reredos is of Painswick and Mansfield stone: the east window of five lights was filled with stained glass in 1886: the stalls are of carved oak: between the chancel and the north chapel is an ancient table tomb, with an effigy, in white marble, to Richard de Grey, sixth Baron Grey de Wilton, who died at Water Hall in 1442, and was buried here, and also his son and grandson; the effigy was repaired and recut by Weston the statuary, at Dr. Browne Willis’s expense; at the foot of the figure is a helmet, said to have belonged to Lord de Grey; in the chapel, which is also the mortuary of the family of Willis, is a raised table tomb to the wife of Dr. Browne Willis, who died at Whaddon Hall in 1724, and an inscribed marble slab to Dr. Willis himself, who died at the same place, 5 Feb. 1760; and in the north wall of the chancel is a very curious brass with effigy to Thomas Sparke, a former rector, who died in 1616: the church was restored in 1867—8 under the direction of W. White esq. F.S.A, of London: the windows and doorway of the chancel, which had been modernized and misplaced, have been reset; some few remains of ancient glass preserved, the body of the church fitted with oak seats, and the tower pinnacles, set up by Willis, removed: the pulpit was the gift of the Rev. W. Bennitt, rector; the cloth for the communion table was worked and presented by Mrs. Williamson, of Little Brickhill vicarage; white and gold altar cloth presented by Mr. and Mrs. Wright, of Brooklands, on Easter-day; the organ was designed by the Rev. W. G. Corker, of Fenny Stratford: there are 463 sittings, one-third being free. The register dates from the year 1665. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £460, with residence, in the gift of Samuel Bennitt esq. of Harborne, and held since 1861 by the Rev. William Bennitt M.A. of Trinity College, Oxford and surrogate: the rectory house, erected in 1834, is a mansion in the Gothic style. A Wesleyan chapel was erected here in 1895. Selby House, the residence of Richard William Selby-Lowndes esq. J.P. is pleasantly situated near the church; the ancient mansion was pulled down in 1871 and a handsome gabled residence erected on the same site, which is surrounded by some fine elm trees. The trustees of the late Sir Philip Henry Pauncefort-Duncombe bart. of Great Brickhill (d. 1895) is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is strong clay; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, oats, beans and barley. The area of the parish is 2,324 acres, viz. Bletchley, 1,171; Water Raton, 943; assessable value, Bletchley, £3,106; Water Raton, £5,999; and the population in 1891 was 697, viz. Bletchley, 456; Water Raton, 241.
National School, built in 1862, & enlarged 1885, to hold 93 children; average attendance, 73.
National School, erected in 1873, at the sole cost of Sir P. D. P. Duncombe bart. for 60 children; average attendance, 38.
The parish Church of Bletchley is a handsome gothic structure, repaired and ornamented at the expence of the late Mr. Browne Willis, who added the pinnacles to the tower, recast the bells, and gave a new font. The internal decorations, however, but ill accord with the style of the building; the altar-piece and the skreen between the nave and the chancel are Grecian, and the pillars are painted to resemble veined marble.
In the chancel is a remarkable tablet in memory of Dr. Sparke, rector of the parish, who died in 1606, with his portrait very neatly engraved on copper, and inclosed within a wooden case.
There is also a remarkable monument in memory of Mr. Edward Taylor, and his wife Faith, with their portraits sketched in white on black marble, and ornamented with various devices.
The manor of Water Hall in this parish was held by the service of finding a man on a horse without a saddle, a bow without a string, and an arrow without an head.
