Historical Description
CHETWODE is a parish separated from Oxfordshire by a feeder of the river Ouse, 3 ½ miles south-by-east from Fulwell and Westbury station on the Oxford and Bletchley section of the London and North Western railway, 5 south-west from Buckingham and 6 north-east from Bicester, in the Northern division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Buckingham, and in the rural deanery of Buckingham (first portion), archdeaconry of Buckingham and diocese of Oxford. The church of SS. Mary and Nicholas, the chancel of which belonged to the conventual church, was made parochial in 1480; it consists of chancel, nave, north and south aisles or chapels and a low tower at the north-west angle containing one bell: the chancel is a fine example of Early English; the whole east end is occupied by five graceful lancets with bold mouldings and slender shafts; the north and south aisles are lighted by triplets of similar character and on the south side is a rich arcade with light shafts supporting foliated caps and the toothed ornament in the mouldings: one arch of this arcade serves as a priest’s doorway, and other arches as sedilia; the remains of ancient stained glass in the eastern windows were some time since removed to the south window of the chancel and the windows refilled with new stained glass of no particular merit: during repairs to the church about 1868, portions of the original tiled paving of the church were discovered, both below the existing floor and in the yard in front, formerly covered by the nave of the conventual church: in the middle of the south aisle, close to the wall, a slab was found, incised with an eight-cusped floriated cross, and with a marginal inscription in Norman-French, which, when perfect, ran, “Sir Jon Giffard gist icey De sa alme Dieu pur sa pitie eit mercy,” and supposed to refer to Sir John Giffard, of Twyford, c. 1350; one of the tiles found appears to bear the arms of this family, viz.: 3 silver lions passant, on a field, gules: in or about 1822, the north chapel and the walls of the chancel, except part on the south side, were taken down and rebuilt: there is a tablet to the memory of Sir John Chetwode bart. who died Dec. 17, 1845, and was buried here: there are 120 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1779; marriages, 1756. The living is a vicarage annexed to that of Barton Hartshorn, joint net yearly value £49, including 46 acres of glebe, in the gift of Major G. F. Green, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Charles Bolden B.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge, who is also rector of and resides at Preston Bissett. Here was a priory of Augustine canons, founded either by Bishop Grostete, of Lincoln, in 1240, or by Sir Ralph de Norwich, in 1244, in honour of St. Mary and St. Nicholas: it was dissolved on account of its poverty in 1460 and annexed to the abbey of Notley; but in 1480, on account of the dilapidated state of the parish church, that of the priory was opened for divine worship. The old parish church of St. Martin, which stood a quarter mile east of the priory, was pulled down in the reign of Queen Elizabeth. There was also here a hermitage, dedicated to SS. Stephen and Lawrence, founded by a member of the Chetwode family. The Rhyne toll of Chetwode, an ancient and singular right exercised by the Chetwodes, begins at 9 o’clock on the morning of the 30th of October, when a horn is blown on the church hill at Buckingham, and ginger bread and beer are distributed among the assembled boys, the girls, by custom, not being admitted to any share in the bounty; the bearer of the cakes and ale then proceeds through the village of Tingewick to the extreme boundary of the county towards Oxfordshire, where, in front of the Red Lion inn, near Finmere, 3 miles distant, the horn is again blown and a fresh distribution takes place, under the same customary limitation; on the conclusion of these formalities, the Rhyne is proclaimed to have begun, and two toll collectors are stationed, one in the town of Buckingham and another in the hamlet of Gawcott, a mile and a half distant, each empowered to levy a tax at the rate of 2s. a score upon all cattle or swine driven through any of the townships or hamlets from which the lord of the manor claims suit and service, until 12 o’clock at night on the 7th November, when the Rhyne closes: the farmers and occupiers of land in those parishes have been accustomed to compound for immunity from this toll by an annual payment of 1s. each, but in every case in which payment has been resisted, toll has been ultimately recovered, either by legal proceedings or by the detention of an animal; the proceeds formerly reached about £20 a year, but since the completion of the Buckinghamshire railway the receipts have materially diminished. The Chetwodes have held this manor from the time of Henry II. and the custom is traditionally derived from the alleged slaughter of a great wild boar, long the terror of these parts, by one head of the Chetwode family, and this tradition was singularly corroborated in 1810, by the discovery of the remains of a boar of an enormous size beneath a large mound of earth overgrown with gorse and underwood, in the parish of Barton Hartshorn and within a mile of Chetwode Manor House; the mound was surrounded by a ditch, known to the country people as “Boar’s Pond:” these remains, exhibited at Buckingham in 1855, are in the possession of Sir George Chetwode bart. the lord of the manor, who claims suit and service by prescriptive right over this place and the neighbouring townships and hamlets of Barton, Tingewick, Preston with Cowley, Hillesden, Gawcott, Lenborough and Bucks Prebend End, and accordingly can require the constables of all these villages, which are said to be included within the limits of an ancient forest of 1,000 acres called Rockwood, to be sworn at his court, held here at Easter. Chetwode Manor House is the residence of Lord Lawrence. The principal landowners are Sir George Chetwode bart. of Oakley Hall, Market Drayton, Major G. F. Green, of the Priory, and George Warr and Henry Holt esqrs. The soil is a heavy clay; the greater part of the land is pasture, the remainder arable. The area is 1,168 acres; assessable value, £1,807; the population in 1891 was 170.
Parish School (mixed), built in 1860, for 50 children; average attendance, 33.
A small village, called Chetwode, on the borders of Oxfordshire.
At this place there was formerly a priory of the order of St. Augustine, founded by Sir Ralph de Norwich, in the year 1244, to the honour of St. Mary and St. Nicholas. T he site of this priory and the estate belonging to it came into the possession of the abbot and convent of Nuttley, and the conventual church of Chetwode became parochial; yet there still remained at this place a cell of a canon or two from Nuttley Abbey.
The principal manor is the property of Sir John Chetwode, Bart, a lineal descendant of Robert de Main, who held it under the bishop of Baieux at the time of the Doomsday survey.
There was anciently an hermitage at Chetwode, dedicated to St. Stephen and St. Laurence, which was founded by an ancestor of the Chetwodes.
From the style of the architecture of Chetwode church it appears to be coeval with the foundation of the monastery. “The chancel is preserved in its original state, having lancet-shaped windows, with slender pillars, the capitals of several of which are highly enriched with figures of animals and foliage.“
