The village is lighted by oil lamps and electric light and gas and supplied with water by the Slough Water Works Co. The church of St. Mary is an elegant building of stone in the Decorated style, from designs by R. Brandon esq. architect, and was rebuilt on an enlarged plan on the former site in 1857—60, at a cost of £6,000, £2,000 of which was contributed by the Rev. H. F. U. Hall M.A. vicar, 1853—68: it consists of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, south porch, north transept and an octagonal tower with spire on the east side of the north transept and containing a clock and 5 bells: all the windows are stained, three being memorials to H.R.H, the Prince Consort: there is a brass to Richard Hanbury, ob. 1605: there are 650 sittings, 200 being free. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a discharged vicarage, net yearly value £274, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Canons of Windsor, and held since 1868 by the Rev. Joseph Henry Thompson M.A. of Queens’ College, Cambridge, hon. canon of Christ Church, and surrogate. On the common is a cemetery chapel, used for Divine service, and seating about 80 persons. The Cemetery, situated on the common, comprises two acres of land given by the late Dowager Duchess of Buccleuch, and has one mortuary chapel, erected at the cost of Mrs. John Crake, of The Lawn; the cemetery is under the control of a Burial Board of 5 members, formed in 1896. The Baptist chapel, built in 1841, is endowed, and will seat 100 persons. The Village Hall, opened Nov. 7, 1881, by H.R.H. The Volunteer Fire Brigade consists of a chief officer and 14 men; the engine house is near the railway station. In the centre of the village is a drinking-fountain and trough, erected in 1886 by Lady Georgiana Needham, of Datchet, and a stone cross, 25 feet in height, erected at the cost of Mrs. John Crake in commemoration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, 1897.
