Historical Description

DENHAM is a parish and village 2 ¼ miles north-west from Uxbridge terminal station on the Great Western railway, 7 north-east from Slough and 7 south-east from Beaconsfield, in the Southern division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Stoke, union of Eton, county court district of Uxbridge, rural deanery of Amersham, archdeaconry of Buckingham and diocese of Oxford; the Grand Junction canal passes through here and the river Colne separates the parish from Middlesex. The church of St. Mary is a Perpendicular building of stone, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of three bays, aisles and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 8 bells: the east window and two lancet windows are stained: the font is ancient: there are several monuments of the Peckhams, including one with recumbent figures, dated 1564, to Sir Edmund Peckham, cofferer in the King’s house, knighted 18 Oct. 1537, and Anne his wife; there is another to Sir Robert Peckham, knighted 1553, privy councillor to Queen Mary, who died in 1569, being then on his travels, and was buried in the church of St. Gregory at Rome, his heart being deposited at Denham, pursuant to his own request; there is also a monument to Sir Roger Hill knt. 1729, several tablets to the Bowyer family, baronets, of Denham Court, a brass to Agnes Jordan, last abbess of Sion, in the parish of Isleworth Middlesex, who was buried here in 1545, another of the 15th century to Thomas Deyrdent, his two wives and 21 children, and a palimpsest brass, long supposed to have been lost: the earlier figure is that of a friar, in gown and hood, with his hands folded within his sleeves and a knotted cord hanging from his girdle, but his feet have been cut off; below is an inscription in Latin to John Pyke, a native of Langport, and under this a shield with a birch-rod surmounting a mace in saltire, between the letters M.J.P.S.; the date is c. 1440; the figure on the other side is that of a lady in a long-sleeved robe and pedimental head-dress, and below an inscription to Amphillis. daughter of Sir Edmund Peckham kt. d. 13 March, 1545: there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £720, including 50 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of trustees of the late B. H. W. Way esq. and held since 1879 by the Rev. Robert Henry Lathbury M.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and surrogate. The Wesleyan chapel here was opened in 1820. Biddle’s and Stanleys charities each produce £6 yearly. Denham Court, the seat of Harold William Swithinbank esq. J.P. is remarkable as being the place where Charles II. was once concealed by Margaret (Weld), wife of Sir William Bowyer, 1st bart. Denham Place, the residence of Mrs. Way, is a large but plainly built structure, erected in 1667. Mrs. Way is lady of the manor. Harold W. Swithinbank esq. Mrs. Goodlake and Mrs. Bewes are the chief landowners. The soil is loam and gravel; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are oats, barley, grass and wheat. The area is 3,881 acres of land and 59 of water; assessable value, £7,092; the population in 1891 was 1,242, including Denham New Town.

National Schools (mixed), built in 1878, for 260 children; average attendance, 45 boys, 55 girls & 40 infants.

Kelly's Directory of Buckinghamshire (1899)

Denham Place, the seat of-Way, Esq. a large brick mansion, erected by Sir Roger Hill, who purchased the manor of Denham in 1670. The chapel is fitted up with mantled wainscot and carving in the style which prevailed in the reign of Queen Elizabeth. The windows are ornamented with coats of arms in stained glass. There is a very curious picture in the library, representing the House of Commons, with portraits of the members. The dresses are of the age of Charles II. and it is probable that it was painted in 1679, when Sir Roger Hill was one of the members for Amersham.

In Denham Church there are several monuments, both ancient and modern: among the former are to be noticed some brass plates of the Durdant family; that of Agnes Jordan, the last abbess of Syon; an altar-tomb in memory of Sir Edmund Peckham, who died in 1570, with the effigies of himself and his lady, and that of his son Sir Robert Peckham, privy counsellor to Queen Mary, who died in 1569, being then on his travels, and was buried in the Church of St. Gregorius at Rome; his heart was deposited at Denham, pursuant to his own request.
