Historical Description
DINTON (in Domesday “Dunnington” or “Donyngton”) is a parish, 17 miles in circumference, 4 miles south-west from Aylesbury station on the London and North Western, Metropolitan Extension and Great Central railways and 5 ½ north-east from Thame, in the Mid division of the county, in the hundred of Aylesbury, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Aylesbury, rural deanery of Aylesbury, archdeaconry of Buckingham and diocese of Oxford. The church of SS. Peter and Paul is an ancient building of stone, chiefly in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle and a massive embattled western tower containing 6 bells, and south porch: an arcade of five Early English arches on octagonal piers separates the nave and aisle: the south doorway is Norman, and is ornamented with zigzag and billet mouldings and spiral shafts: in the tympanum, inclosed with an intertwined guilloche, is a rude carving of two wyverns devouring fruit from a tree, and below these another rude carving of St. Michael thrusting a cross into the mouth of a winged monster, a kind of dragon: in the chancel are two piscinae and a hagioscope, and there is a piscina in the south aisle: the pulpit dates from 1600; an old oak table, dated 1606, and a chest dated 1612, are still preserved: the porch is Perpendicular and the font Early Decorated: the whole edifice was restored in 1868, when the chancel was almost entirely rebuilt, and the east window, a fine triplet of lancets, filled with stained glass, partly under the direction of Lady Eastlake, to the memory of the Rev. John Harrison, vicar 1833—65, and other members of his family, 1853—68, and presented by his daughter, Mrs. Acton Tindal, of the Manor house, Aylesbury: the west window was erected by Mr. Sackville Phelps to his wife, Matilda (Goodall), 1867: there is also a memorial window placed by the Rev. Charles Henry Burton M.A. vicar, 1869—79 and Lydia Helen, his wife, to their daughter, Emiline Lydia, 1871: the ancient monuments, formerly in the chancel, were re-erected in the tower: the brasses, now in the south aisle, include one to the father of Simon Mayne, one of the judges who condemned King Charles I. and Colubery, his wife, 1617—28: there are others to John Sutton and Agnes, his wife, 1518, and to the family of Compton, 1424, Thomas Grenewey and wife, 1539: John Lee of Morton, 1500, and William Lee and Ann, his wife, 1486, and Elenor, wife of Sir Thomas Lee, of Morton, 1633; the communion plate includes two flagons, given by Sir John Vanhattem knt. in 1772, and a salver given by Thomas Ingoldsby and Benjamin Gatton, vicar, in 1721: the old pews were replaced with fine open seats, under the superintendence of the late G. E. Street esq. R.A., F.S.A, diocesan architect, and the church reopened December 8th. 1868, by the late Bishop of Oxford: there are 350 sittings: in the churchyard are remains of a cross. The register dates from the year 1562. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £345, with 29 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1898 by the Rev. William Hodgson M.A. of St. Peter’s College, Cambridge. The Baptist chapel, erected in 1847, seats 75 persons, and there is also a Baptist Mission Hall, built in 1883, with 150 sittings. Dinton Hall, the seat of Lieut.-Col. Liebert Edward Goodall D.L., J.P. is picturesquely seated near the church and surrounded by a garden planted for the purposes of botanical study; the mansion exhibits various styles of domestic architecture and its western end is evidently ancient: the north front, with its gables, mullioned windows and noble chimney shafts, seems to indicate a Jacobean origin; the south front is later: some carved stone work in the cellar is said to date from time of Edward the Confessor and there is no doubt a house has existed on the same site from very early times: this house is an object of great interest both from its historical associations and on account of the collection of fossils and other antiquities which have been discovered in the neighbourhood and now preserved here; the manor was formerly held by Simon Mayne, and one of the judges of the Commission Court at the trial of King Charles I. to whose death warrant he affixed his signature and seal; at the Restoration he concealed himself in Dinton Hall, but afterwards surrendered, and was tried with other regicides at the Old Bailey, October 16th. 1660, and committed to the Tower, where he died in the following year, and was buried in the church, April 18th. 1661; in 1727, Simon Mayne, his grandson, sold the manor to John Vanhattem esq. father of Sir John Vanhattem, knighted by George III. January 23rd, 1761, from whom.
Lieut.-Colonel Goodall is descended; amongst other curiosities in the house is a basket-hilted sword used by Cromwell at the battle of Naseby, besides numerous specimens of armour, and three brass models of ancient guns: in the windows are heraldic shields of William Warham, Archbishop of Canterbury (1503-33) and of the Poynings and Dayrell families, the royal arms of Henry VIII. and another coat unknown.
John Bigg, better known as the “Dinton Hermit,” was employed as joint secretary to Simon Mayne, the regicide, and Col. Dick Ingoldsby, also a regicide, of Waldridge, in this parish; he was brought up for the medical profession, and is popularly believed to have been the actual executioner of Charles I.; after the Restoration he became melancholy, and betaking himself to a recluse life, dwelt for many years in a cave underground in this parish without ever changing his clothes, which he mended by placing pieces of cloth or leather over the decayed parts; one of his shoes preserved at the hall was thus mended till the leather became more than tenfold its original thickness: the fellow to it Sir John Vanhattem gave to the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford, where it still remains. The Dinton Album, commenced in 1772 by Sir John Vanhattem, contains a statistical account of the parish from the MSS. of Browne Willis and others, together with paintings by Mr. Britten, architect, and the Rev. William Goodall. Near the Aylesbury and Thame road is a small ruin called Dinton Castle, surrounded by fir trees. During the summer of 1852 excavations were made on the site of Sir John Vanhattem’s summer house by the late J. G. Akerman esq. F.S.A, and on 14th June a number of skeletons were discovered; the spot was further explored during the following October by the late Rev. James Joseph Goodall M.A. of Dinton Hall, and other skeletons were met with as well as a quantity of broken pottery and a kind of well, 5 or 6 feet deep, closely packed with stones; in digging the foundations of the now ruinous building called “Dinton Castle,” a number of skeletons, arms of various descriptions, a very beautiful Saxon drinking glass and a glass bottle of the time of Edward II. were exhumed. The “fritillaria meleagris,” or snake’s head lily, grows abundantly at Waldridge. There are seven sub-manors in the parish. Lieut.-Col. Liebert Edward Goodall, who is lord of the manor, Mrs. Parker, of Thame, the trustees of Mrs. Franklin, and Maj.-Gen. W. N. Waller, of Woodstock road, Oxford, are the chief landowners. The soil is clay, sand and limestone; subsoil, limestone and clay. In many parts of the parish, between the surface and the rock, is a deposit of friable lime varying from one to several feet in thickness, generally known as the “wych earth” but more commonly Called “Dinton marble;” when puddled with water and chopped straw it is used for the walls of cottages and out-houses. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, beans and turnips. The area is 3,885 acres of land and 12 of water; assessable value, £5,661; the population in 1891 was 747.
National School (mixed), built in 1871, for 180 children; average attendance, 150; supported by subscriptions & a government grant.
At Dinton, about four miles from Aylesbury, on the left of our road, is the seat of Mr. Goodall, an ancient mansion, for many years the residence of the Maynes, the ancient owners of the manor. Mr. Goodall has a collection of extraneous fossils, from Dinton and its neighbourhood, where they are found in great abundance; and some antiquities discovered in a ploughed field, near the road to Thame, the most remarkable of which is a small thin green glass, of a conical form, which is engraved in the 10th volume of the Archæologia.
The south door of Dinton Church has a very curious Roman arch.
Among other curious things in Mr. Goodall’s possession is one of the shoes of John Bigg, an eccentric character, who was a native and inhabitant of this parish, and commonly called the Dinton Hermit. In the earlier part of his life he was clerk to Simon Mayne, the regicide, who acted as a justice of the peace, for many years before his death, which happened in 1696. He lived in a cave under ground; his method of mending his cloths, which he never exchanged, was by sewing fresh pieces of cloth or leather, over the decayed parts. The shoe above-mentioned has been thus mended lid the leather became more than tenfold its original thickness; the fellow to it is in the Bodleian Library, at Oxford.
