Historical Description

HALTON is a parish in the Mid division of the county, 2 miles north-by-east from Wendover station on the Metropolitan Extension railway, and 5 south-east from Aylesbury, in the hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Aylesbury, rural deanery of Wendover, archdeaconry of Buckingham and diocese of Oxford. A branch of the Grand Junction canal and a portion of the Icknield Way run through this parish. The village is supplied with water from the Chiltern Hills by the company which supplies Aylesbury. The church of St. Michael is a small building of stone, chiefly in the Early English style, and consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of five bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 4 bells; it was rebuilt in 1813, and in 1886—7 was restored throughout at a cost of £511, defrayed by sub-scription: in the north wall of the chancel there is a brass with effigy to Henry Bradshaw, Chief Baron of the Exchequer, ob. 27 July, 1553; there is also a brass to the Rev. Herbert Alfred Grantham, rector of Halton, 1883—95: there are 130 sittings. The register dates from about the year 1606. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £200, in the gift of Alfred Charles de Rothschild esq. and held since 1895 by the Rev. Charles Edmund Roberts M.A. of St. John’s College, Oxford, who resides at Weston Turville. Bradshaw’s charity amounts to £22 yearly, Lambert’s to about £5 5s. and Turpin’s to 20s. Halton Mansion, beautifully situated on the slope of Haddington Hill, is the seat of Alfred Charles de Rothschild esq. who is lord of the manor and sole owner of the land. The soil is chalky; subsoil, chalk, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans &c. The area is 1,455 acres, of which there are about 500 acres of beechwood and 11 of water; assessable value, £2,753; the population in 1891 was 226.

Halton, a small village, on the left of our road; the manor-house, which for some years past has been the principal residence of Sir John Dashwood King, is pleasantly situated on the banks of the Grand Junction Canal, sheltered by the Chiltern Hills.

In the parish church is a brass plate, with the effigies of Chief Baron Bradshaw, who purchased the manor of Archbishop Cranmer, and died in 1553.
