Ridley M.A. rector here 1840—82; three small stained windows and a marble monument to Edward Marjoribanks, of Greenelands, dated 1868; in the nave are several monuments and fragments of brasses; and at the west end, under the tower, are other fragments of brasses and a large carved oak chest said to have been formed from Cardinal Wolsey’s bedstead: here also is a canopied monument of freestone, supported by two fluted pillars to “Raffe Scrope esq. cousin unto Henry, Lord Scrope, of Bolton,” dated 1572: in 1883 the tower was raised 10 feet, refaced with flint, and stone buttresses added at a cost of £800, under the direction of Mr. Woodyer, architect, of Graffham, the bells being also rehung: the church itself had been previously restored in 1858—9 at a cost of £2,981: there are 500 sittings, about half being appropriated: in the churchyard is a mausoleum to members of the Kenrick family and a marble memorial to the Rev. Canon William Henry Ridley M.A. rector 1840—82: a new graveyard was opened in 1889, an acre of land having been presented for the purpose by the late Right Hon. W. H. Smith M.P. and in 1897 it was enlarged by the addition of half an acre presented by the Hon. W. F. D. Smith M.P.: the lych gate at the entrance was erected in 1893 by the inhabitants of Hambleden and Remenham, as a memorial to the Right Hon. W. H. Smith P.C., M.P. who died 6 Oct. 1891, and to whom there is also a granite cross. The register dates from the year 1566. The living is a rectory, net income £400, with residence and 18 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Hon. W. F. D. Smith M.P. and held since 1896 by the Rev. Alfred Herbert Stanton M.A. of New College, Oxford. The rectory house was built in 1725. St. John the Evangelist’s chapel of ease, at Frieth in the north of the parish, is an edifice of flint, with stone dressings, in the Gothic style, erected by the Rev. W. H. Ridley M.A. then rector, in 1848 and enlarged in 1872, when the south aisle was added; it now consists of chancel, nave, south aisle, north porch and a bell-cote containing one bell; in the chancel are two stained windows, one of which is a memorial to Frederick Edward Cripps, and in the south aisle is one to Mrs. C. Frederick Danvers Smith M.P. stands on the banks of the river Thames, and has extensive flower gardens tastefully laid out; the grounds contain some fine cedars of Lebanon and a splendid Wellingtonia: the house was fortified during the Civil war and stood a six months’ siege in 1644; during the enlargement of the house in 1853 several cannon balls were dug up. The Manor House, built by Emanuel (le Scrope), first and only Earl of Sunderland of this family (d. 1630), is the property and residence of Charles A. Scott-Murray esq. J.P.: Charles the First is said to have taken refuge here in 1646 after his escape from Oxford, then invested by Fairfax: the late James Thomas Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan K.C.B. who led the famous charge of the light brigade at Balaklava, was born at this house 16th Oct. 1797. M.P., Q.C., J.P. is a building of brick in the Queen Anne style, pleasantly situated on an eminence, and commanding a fine view of the surrounding country. Kelly's Directory of Buckinghamshire (1899)

In the parish Church of Hambledon, a small village, pleasantly situated in a valley, about a mile out of the road, and nearly opposite Medmenham Abbey, are some memorials of the family of Senope; an ancient mural monument, without either name or date, which from the arms, and the name of Elizabeth, which occurs in some verses, appears to have been set up for Thomas Lord Sandys of the Vine, who married Elizabeth daughter of George Lord Roos, who died in 1526, and a tablet for Dr. Francis Gregory, rector of Hambledon, who died in 1707. In the burial place belonging to the D’Oyleys, is a handsome monument for Sir Cope D'Oyley, who died in 1633, and his wife Martha, “who lived together in inviolated bands of holy wedlock twenty-two years, and multiplied themselves into five sons and five daughters.“

The following lines are inscribed on the monument, and were probably written by Francis Quarles, Lady D’Oyley’s brother.

Ask not of me who’s buried here?

Goe ask the commons, ask the shiere:

Goe ask the church, they’ll tell you who,

As well as blubber’d eyes can do,

Goe ask the heraulds, ask the poor,

Thine eares shall hear enough to ask no more.

Then if thine eyes bedew this sacred urne

Each drop a pearl will turn,

T’ adorn his tombe; or if thou canst not vent,

Thou brihg’st more marble to his monument.

Under the Lady is inscribed:

Wouldst thou render, draw to life,

The perfect copy of a wife,

Read on; and then from shame redeem,

That lost hut honourable name.

This was once in spirit a Jael

Rebecca in grace in heart an Abigail,

In works a Dorcas, to the church a Hannah,

And to her spouse Susanna:

Prudently simple, providently wary;

To the world a Martha, to heaven a Mary.

The parish of Hambledon is nearly five miles in length, and four in breadth. It contains about 1200 acres of woodland, 3500 acres of arable and pasture, and 150 common and waste. The number of farms are 30, the cottages 154. The inhabitants nearly 1000. The inequality of the ground, the fine mixture of wood, corn, and pastures, and the diversified appearance of hill and dale, render this neighbourhood extremely beautiful.

Greenland House, near Hambledon, was an ancient seat of the D’Oyleys, and during the civil wars in the reign of Charles I. was the residence of Sir John D’Qyley, whose attachment to the royal cause converted it into a garrison, which sustained a siege of six months before its governor, Colonel Hawkins, capitulated upon honourable terms. The house was nearly reduced to a heap of ruins, out of which a farm-house has been erected. The ground about the farm exhibits the vestiges of the extensive fortifications and buildings raised during the siege.
