Historical Description
HARDWICKE is a parish, on the road to Buckingham, 4 miles north of Aylesbury, its nearest railway station, and 13 south-east from Buckingham, in the Northern division of the county, hundred of Cottesloe, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Aylesbury, rural deanery of Mursley, archdeaconry of Buckingham and diocese of Oxford. The church of St. Mary is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and a western square embattled tower containing 5 bells and a sanctus bell and a south porch; in the south aisle is a very curious monument to Sir Thomas Lee knt. dated 1616; there are also seven tablets to former rectors of this parish: at the east end of the aisle is a piscina; the church was restored in 1872-3 under the supervision of the late G. E. Street esq. R.A. at a cost of nearly £4,000, when several stained windows were inserted, principally through the munificence of Peter Reid esq. of the Stock Exchange; there is also a memorial window to the Rev. Christopher Erle M.A. rector from 1833, and a brass eagle lectern has been placed in the church as a memorial to Philip Cazenove esq. by his son, Henry Cazenove esq. who died 1894; on the north side of the nave is a stained window commemorating the silver wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Cazenove; a font was presented about 1893 by Miss C. M. Yonge; there are 360 sittings; in the churchyard is a lych gate, and on the south side is a monument recording the re-interment by the late Lord Nugent, of 247 persons killed at the battle of Aylesbury, March 21st, 1642, which had been found on a field near Aylesbury. The registers date from the 16th century and are very imperfect. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £700, derived from 477 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of New College, Oxford, and held since 1899 by the Rev. John Theodore Norris Lee M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Here is a Mission hall, built in 1883, and seating 150 persons. Two charities of £3 each are annually distributed in bread to the poor. Some gigantic Saurian and other fossil remains discovered here were presented by a late rector to the Museum of Practical Geology, in Jermyn street, London. The Warden and Fellows of New College, Oxford, who are lords of the manor, Lord Cottesloe, and Leopold de Rothschild esq. of Ascott Park, are the principal landowners. The soil is clay and gravel; subsoil, day. The chief crops are wheat, beans and hay. The area is 1,213 acres; assessable value, 1,899; the population in 1891 was 183.
Free Schools (boys & girls), built in 1871, for 120, & endowed by the late Dr. Bridle, who bequeathed a legacy for the education of 18 boys & 12 girls, since which the administration of the bequest has been reorganized by the Charity Commissioners; the endowment now produces £115 yearly, of which four-ninths goes to the maintenance of school & the remainder, five-ninths, to the clothing of children &; the master’s salary &c.; average attendance, 56.
School (infants), erected at the sole expense of Mrs. Cazenove, & presented to the parish in 1877, for 80 children; average attendance, 25.
