Historical Description

IBSTONE is a parish 9 ¾ miles north-west from High Wycombe station on the Maidenhead and Thames section of the Great Western railway, 9 north from Henley, 8 ½ north-west from Marlow, in the Southern division of the county, hundreds of Desborough and Pirton, Desborough (1st division) petty sessional division, union and county court district of Wycombe, rural deanery of Wycombe, archdeaconry of Buckingham and diocese of Oxford. This parish is now wholly in Bucks, the part previously in Oxfordshire having been transferred to the former county. The church of St. Nicholas is a plain building of stone in the Norman and Early English styles, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western turret containing 2 bells: the doorways and chancel arch are of Norman date, the chancel and nave are Early English: there is a fine old carved pulpit: there are 120 sittings. In the churchyard there is a remarkably fine yew tree supposed to be about 1,000 years old. The register dates from the year 1665. The living is a rectory, united to Fingest, joint net yearly value £226, with 107 acres of glebe and residence, in the alternate gift of the Bishop of Oxford and Merton College, Oxford, and held since 1878 by the Rev. Henry Joscelyne M.A. of New inn Hall, Oxford. Ibstone House, the seat of Mrs. Brewis, is a modern stuccoed building on an eminence, and affords good views of the neighbourhood. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel. The Warden and Fellows of Merton College, Oxford, who hold the manor, and Mrs. Brewis are the principal landowners. The soil is chalky; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,121 acres; assessable value, £1,112; the population in 1891 was 286.

Under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1888, ’ by Local Government Board Provisional Order, dated September 30, 1895, the whole of Ibstone civil parish is now in Bucks.

National School (mixed), with an endowment from the Goring Heath trustees, will hold 50 children; average attendance, 35.
