Historical Description

SHENLEY CHURCH END is a township, parish and scattered village, partly on the great Holyhead road, 4 miles north-west from Bletchley Junction station on the main line of the London and North Western railway, 4 south-east from Stony Stratford and 6 south-west from Newport Pagnell, in the Northern division of the county, hundred, union and county court district of Newport Pagnell, Stony Stratford petty sessional division, and in the rural deanery of Buckinghsm (second division), and archdeaconry of Buckingham and diocese of Oxford. The church of St. Mary is a building of stone in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, transept, south porch and a fine central tower containing a clock and 5 bells: in the chancel are tablets to the Knapp family and a monument to the Ashfield family; there is also a very fine marble monument in the south aisle to Thomas Stafford esq. of Tattenhoe, founder of the almshouses here, who died in 1607: the church was restored in 1888—90, at a cost of £1,997, and affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1652. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £315, including 212 acres of glebe with residence, in the gift of and held since 1890 by the Rev. Edgar Astley Milne M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. There are almshouses for three poor men or women, founded by Thomas Stafford esq. of Tattenhoe. Shenley House, the property of James Waddell esq. but at present occupied by the Hon. Mrs. Isted, is at handsome mansion of stone, pleasantly situated near the church, and approached through an avenue of lime trees. The chief landowners are William Selby-Lowndes esq. of Whaddon Hall, William George Grimwood esq. and Charles Morrell esq. of Milton Hill, Berks, the trustees of the late Mr. W. Battams and the rector in right of his glebe. The soil is alluvial and clay; subsoil, stone and clay. The land is mostly pasture, with some wheat, oats, barley and beans. The area is 1,662 acres; assessable value, £2,009 5 the population of the township in 1891 was 180; entire parish, 395.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 25 Nov. 1873 for Shenley & Loughton; J. Morris, clerk to the board.

Kelly's Directory of Buckinghamshire (1899)

In the parish Church of Shenley, about two miles and a half from Stony Stratford, on the right of our road, there is a handsome monument, in memory of Thomas Stafford, Esq of Tottenhoe, who died in 1607. He founded an Almshouse at this place, and endowed it with 35l. per annum, for four poor men and two women, the men to be allowed 1s. 9d. each weekly, and the women; 1s. 2d.; the sum of 13s. 4d. to be allowed yearly for the men’s, and 8s. 6d. for the women’s cloathing.
