Historical Description

SYMPSON (or Simpson) is a parish and village on the Grand Junction canal, 1 mile north from Fenny Stratford and 2 miles north-east from Bletchley Junction station on the main line of the London and North Western railway, in the Northern division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Newport Pagnell, rural deanery of Bletchley, archdeaconry of Buckingham, and diocese of Oxford. A portion of the town of Fenny Stratford is in this parish, which is supplied with water from Great Brickhill by the Fenny Stratford Water Works. The river Ousel forms its eastern boundary.

This parish is governed by the Fenny Stratford Urban District Council, formed in 1895, under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73). The church of St. Thomas the Apostle is an ancient cruciform building of stone, in the Perpendicular and Decorated styles, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, south porch and a central tower containing 4 bells; in the church are monuments to the Hanmers, including one by Bacon to Sir Walden Hanmer bart. d. 1783: the chancel was restored at the cost of the late Sir Wyndham Edward Hanmer bart. of Stockgrove (d. 1887), in 1873, when the transepts were restored and the tower underpinned: there are 120 sittings. The present register dates from the year 1718; the earlier ones have been lost. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £190, derived principally from 225 acres of glebe, with residence, built in 1872, in the gift of Sir Wyndham Charles Henry Hanmer bart. and held since 1891 by the Rev. William Rice B.A. of St. David’s College, Lampeter. The Wesleyan Methodist chapel, built in 1842 and rebuilt on a new site in 1870, has 100 sittings. Pigott’s charity of £14 17s. 10 ½d. a year is given in coals to the poor. The manorial rights have ceased for 150 years. The principal landowners are John Sipthorp, and Francis Farnborough esqrs. and Miss Pinfold, of Walton. The soil is light, some clay; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, oats, beans and barley. The parish contains 1,347 acres of land and 19 of water; assessable value, £6,071; the population in 1891 was 727, of which 477 are in Fenny Stratford.

This place is included in the United School Board district of Woughton-on-the-Green & Sympson, formed 19 Jan. 1875.
