Historical Description

WHADDON is a township, parish and village, 5 miles north-west from Bletchley Junction station on the main line of the London and North Western railway and 3 ½ north from Swanbourne station on the Oxford and Bletchley branch of the same line, 4 ½ south from Stony Stratford, 5 north-east from Winslow and 7 east from Buckingham, in the Northern division of the county, Cottesloe hundred, Winslow petty sessional division and union, county court district of Buckingham, rural deanery of Mursley, archdeaconry of Buckingham and diocese of Oxford. The church of St. Mary, standing on high ground near the Chase, is an ancient building of stone, consisting of chancel with north aisle or chapel, nave of four bays, aisles, north and south porches, and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 6 bells: the chancel has an Early English piscina and sedilia, but the east window and some other features are Decorated; the chapel is also of this date, and has on the north side a handsome monument with long epitaph to Arthur, 14th Lord Grey de Wilton K.G. who was lord deputy of Ireland during the rebellions of Desmond, Ballinglass and O’Neill, one of the commissioners who tried Mary Queen of Scots, and died 14 Oct. 1593; there is also a very rich and curious brass to Margaret Missenden, dated 1612: the nave is separated from the aisles by arcades of four arches, all of the Transition Norman period, but the walls are Decorated: each doorway retains a stoup: the font is Early English: there are other monuments to Thomas King, 1770, and to William bis son, 1775, and a brass recording the gift of a clock to the church in 1613 by Amy (Allen), wife of Joseph Emerton, minister: the church was extensively repaired and restored in 1889 and 1891, at a cost of £985, and affords 220 sittings, 200 being free. The churchyard, the gift of Mr. Selby-Lowndes, was consecrated Oct. 6, 1890. The register dates from the year 1580. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £220, derived from 243 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of W. Selby-Lowndes esq. and held since 1899 by the Rev. Edward Arthur Selby-Lowndes B.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. The Congregational chapel, erected in 1865, will seat 150 persons. The poor’s land consists of 4 acres. In a part of Whaddon Chase called “Nasbury,” about 320 ancient British gold coins were discovered in February, 1849, and claimed by Mr. Selby-Lowndes as lord of the manor; they are of a later period than those of Cunobelin, and are stamped with a wheat ear and rampant horse: in the coppice adjoining there are indications of a large rectangular encampment, evidently Roman, inclosing a space of about 5 acres, with a vallum and fosse quite perfect. Three miles west of Whaddon, and near the site of the battle which is said to have been fought by Cunobelin at Thornborough bridge, are two tumuli, one of which was opened in 1842, and disclosed many Roman relics; other Roman antiquities were met with in 1857 and 1858, chiefly consisting of coins, about 200 in number, all of which, as treasure trove, were surrendered to the lord of the manor.

Whaddon Chase was formerly the principal woodland in this part of the county and contained 2,200 acres of coppice, with valuable timber, and maintained 1,000 head of deer: the greater part of it is now inclosed and cultivated.

Whaddon Hall, the seat of William Selby-Lowndes esq. J.P. is a mansion of stone, containing many spacious and elegantly-fitted apartments; “few private residences in the kingdom,” writes Lipscomb, “can be found to rival the magnificence of its splendid staircase:” the pleasure grounds, gardens and park extend over 315 acres; great numbers of the forest trees are of immense size, and the views from the place are delightful: up to 1840 the deer were allowed to roam wild over the Chase, but they have now a portion of the grounds fenced off for them. This manor became the property in 1698 of Dr. Willis, the celebrated physician, and being inherited by his grandson, Browne Willis esq. LL.D, the well-known antiquary, was for many years his residence; here he accumulated the valuable manuscript collections bequeathed by him to the University of Oxford, as well as a fine library of printed books; the greater part, if not the whole, of his published works, were also prepared for the press at Whaddon; he died 5th February, 1760, and was buried in the chancel of Fenny Stratford church. Queen Elizabeth visited Whaddon Hall in 1568, at which time it was held by Arthur, Lord Grey; but the old mansion, as then existing, with its great hall, 50 feet in length was partially destroyed on its coming into the joint possession of Thomas Willis and James Selby in 1698; eventually the whole property came into the hands of Thomas James Selby, son of the foregoing, who died in 1772, and no lawful heir appearing, it was surrendered, by order of the Court of Chancery in 1783, to Mr. William Lowndes, of Winslow, who had been appointed by Mr. Selby his lawful heir, if no heir-at-law could be found. W. Selby-Lowndes esq. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is light and stiff yellow clay; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and beans. The area of the township and parish is 2,520 acres, a large portion of which is comprised in Whaddon Chase, celebrated for its fox covers; rateable value, £8,960; the population in 1891 was 398.

National School, built 1841 & endowed with £10 yearly by the late T. Coare esq. of Newgate street, London, for 100 children; average attendance, 64.

Kelly's Directory of Buckinghamshire (1899)

At Snelshall, near Whaddon Church, a few miles north of Winslow, there was a small convent of Black Monks, dedicated to St. Leonard, built by Ralph Martel, before the tenth of Edward III. Some arches of this building still remain, and support the north side of a farm-house. The four bells that were in the turret of the old building, were removed to the church of Bradwell; on the largest of which is inscribed, Vox Augustini Sonet in aure Dei. The yearly value of this priory at the Resignation was 18l. 1s. 11d.
