Historical Description

WOLVERTON is a parish, and market town, with a station on the London and North Western railway, which is also the junction of a branch 4 miles in length to Newport Pagnell, and is 2 miles east from Stony Stratford, 4 south-west from Newport Pagnell and 53 from London, in the Northern division of the county, hundred of Newport Pagnell, Stony Stratford petty sessional division, union of Potterspury, county court district of Newport Pagnell, and in the rural deanery of Buckingham (second portion), archdeaconry of Buckingham and diocese of Oxford. The Grand Junction canal passes through. A tramway line has been opened between Wolverton and Stony Stratford. The church of the Holy Trinity, erected in 1815, on the site of the former church, is a cruciform building of stone, in a quasi-Norman style, and consists of chancel, nave, transepts and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 6 bells: the lower stage of the tower forms the entrance: all the windows are stained, and in the chancel is a life-size recumbent effigy in marble of Sir Thomas Longueville bart. of Wolverton, and of Prestatyn, Flintshiret who was killed by a fall from his horse in 1685: in 1877 the church was decorated, throughout in polychrome by Mr. Daniel Bell, the whole of the figures being executed by his own hand the communion table was at the same time enlarged and a reredos of English oak, designed by Mr. J. Swinfen Harris, 1 architect, of Stony Stratford, erected; this is divided by cupped arches into three compartments, containing various figures of saints and angels, richly painted: in 1898 a carved oak canopy, also designed by Mr. Harris, was provided for the font: there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1599. The living is a discharged vicarage, net yearly value £100, in the gift of the Radcliffe trustees, and held since 1895 by the Rev. Francis Edward Rooke B.A. of Oriel College, Oxford. Sir Edward Longueville, of Wolverton, and Prestatyn, Flintshire, was created a Baronet of Nova Scotia in 1638: the last baronet, also Sir Edward Longueville, died in 1718, and five years before his death he sold the property to Dr. John Radcliffe, the celebrated physician and sometime M.P. for Buckingham, who bequeathed it to the University of Oxford, in trust for the benefit of the Radcliffe Library and Observatory. The Radcliffe trustees, who are lords of the manor, and the London and North Western Railway Company are the principal landowners. The entire area is 2,288 acres of land and 37 of water; rateable value, Wolverton St. Mary, St. George and Holy Trinity, £40,927; the population of the whole of the parish in 1891 was 4,147, of which 204 are in the ecclesiastical parish of Holy Trinity.
