Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
ICKLETON is a village and parish on the borders of Essex, and a mile north from the Great Chesterford station of the London and Cambridge section of the Great Eastern railway, which is in this parish, 11 miles south from Cambridge, 7 south-west from Linton, and 5 north from Saffron Walden and 44 by road from London, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of Whittlesford, union and petty sessional division of Linton, court court district of Saffron Walden, rural deanery of Camps, and archdeaconry and diocese of Ely. The church of St. Mary is a large building of stone in the Early Norman style, some portions being, however, of a later date: it consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south transept, south porch and a central tower with a lofty spire containing a clock and 6 bells: the chancel was entirely rebuilt by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, in 1882—3, and retains a piscina and sedilia, and in 1885 further restorations were effected by Sir Robert Herbert G.C.B. and others, the total cost amounting to £1,416: in the north aisle is a memorial window to the Hon. Algernon Herbert, d. 11 June, 1855, and the walls bear some ancient frescoes, much obscured by time: on the jambs of the clerestory windows are various figured, and the tower ceiling is also painted: the nave arcades are supposed to be Saxon: a part of the rood loft and a screen of Perpendicular date remain, the under part of the rood loft being richly traceried: in 1886 a marble memorial was erected to St. Leger Algernon Herbert C.M.G. war correspondent, who was killed at Abu Klea in the Soudan, January 17, 1885: the church affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £280, with residence and including 17 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1864 by the Rev. John Amps M.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Here is a Congregational chapel, erected in 1842, which has 200 sittings, and a Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1852. A Cemetery of one acre was formed in 1883 at a cost of £500, with a chapel, and is under the control of the Parish Council. The charity lands and cottages produce £140 yearly, which sum, excepting a small portion which is given to the school fund, is distributed in fuel and clothing. Martin’s charity of £2 6s. and Swan’s, of £1 4s. yearly, are also distributed in coal. Here was once a Benedictine nunnery, founded in 1190 by Aubrey de Vere, first Earl of Oxford, or his father-in-law. Sir William de Cantelupe knt. and dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene; the prioress had a grant from King Henry III. of a weekly market and an annual fair, abolished in 1875: the remains of the Priory, now the property of Mr. James Welch, have walls 3 feet thick: several stone coffins have been dug up on the site. Caldrees is the residence of Sir Robert George Wyndham Herbert G.C.B., D.C.L., LL.D., D.L., J.P. and Ickleton Grange the residence of George William H. Bowen esq. D.L., J.P. Here are three manors, belonging respectively to Sir R. G. W. Herbert and Clare and Trinity Colleges; the lords of the manors, with Mr. James Welch, the Ecclesiastical Commissioners and the trustees of Col. Charles Llewellyn, are the principal landowners. The soil is light; subsoil, chalk and gravel. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 2,695 acres of land and 5 of water; rateable value, £5,509; the population in 1901 was 598. By an Order which came into operation March 25, 1886, a detached part of this parish was amalgamated with Hinxton.
