Historical Description

Acton, which was a considerable place in the time of the Saxons, and the residence of Morcar, brother of the last Earl of Mercia. The church is a new and neat building, containing some monuments of the Mainwaring and Wilbraham families. The old church was used as a temporary prison, after the battle of Nantwich. The chief employment of the inhabitants is shoe-making. Many of the houses are very old and irregular, though others are large and convenient.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

ACTON is a township, village and large parish, one mile west from Nantwich station, on the Crewe and Shrewsbury section of the London and North Western railway, 5 west-south-west from Crewe, 12 north-by-east from Whitchurch, 18 south-east from Chester, in the Eddisbury division of the county, Nantwich division of the Nantwich hundred, petty sessional, union and county court district of Nantwich, and in the rural deanery of Nantwich and archdeaconry and diocese of Chester. The Shropshire Union canal passes through to Ellesmere for Liverpool, and also to Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury. The parish of Acton now consists of twelve townships. The church of St. Mary is a fine building of red sandstone, in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, with some remains (including the base of the tower) of Norman work, and alterations of later date of a debased character, and consists of chancel, clerestoried nave of four bays, aisles and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and six bells: the tower was originally much loftier, but a portion having fallen 15th March, 1757, during a great storm, it was not deemed advisible to restore it to its original height. At the eastern extremity of the south aisle is a chapel belonging to the Wilbraham family, of Dorfold Hall, and contains an altar tomb with recumbent effigies in white marble to Richard Thomas Wilbraham and Elizabeth his wife, with Latin inscription, dated 1661. At the east end of the north aisle is an interesting canopied monument, with recumbent effigy, to one of the Mainwaring, but the inscription is now almost obliterated. At the back of the monument are wall paintings of heads. There is also a brass with arms to Wilbraham Spencer Tollemache esq. J.P., D.L. of Dorfold Hall, d. 1890, and Ann (Tomkinson), his wife, d. 1871. The east and west windows and one in the south aisle are stained: the church was completely restored in 1893 and in 1895; some fragments of Norman arcading with figures were put together and placed in the Wilbraham chapel. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £471, net yearly value £400, with 8 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Lord Tollemache of Helmingham, who is also impropriator of the great tithes, and held since 1891 by the Rev. William Henry O’Bryen-Hodge M.A. of Hertford College, Oxford. Sir R. Wilbraham’s and Huxley’s charities for distribution, amounting to about £100 yearly: these are devoted to the main tenance of eight poor widows and to apprenticing poor girls and boys; there are also three charities, together about £16 yearly, for bread for poor of the parish and two almshouses for two poor widows, founded by the Wilbrahams of Woodhay, and supported by Lord Tollemache. The church lands of 24a. 2r. 37p. together with house &c. yield £40 yearly for church purposes. Dorfold Hall was built in 1616, on the site of a former residence, by Sir Ralph Wilbraham, Master of the Court of Requests in Ireland, in the reign of James I. and contains several oak panelled rooms and amongst them one with the Royal Arms, and the inscription I.R. 1621, on stone above the mantelpiece; over the fireplace in the drawing room are the arms, painted on stone, of the three Knights of the Garter, who accompanied the king on his journey to Nantwich, the Earl of Burleigh, the Earl of Derby and Sir Christopher Hatton; the drawing-room contains a fine ornamental ceiling, with pendants and a cornice, and is altogether one of the finest specimens of Elizabethan work in England. There are several pictures by celebrated painters, including Gainsborough, Morland and Hondekoeter, and comprising a fine portrait of Mr. Tomkinson (mentioned below), by Gainsborough, and a beautiful picture of his two sons, by the same artist. In 1754 Dorfold was sold by the Wilbrahams and is now the property of his descendant, Henry James Tollemache esq. M.P., D.L., J.P. who succeeded to the property of which his mother, the great grand-daughter of Mr. James Tomkinson, was the heiress; the park extends over 150 acres and contains some fine timber. It is occupied by Charles Savile Roundell esq. H. J. Tollemache esq. M.P. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is a good mixture, with a subsoil of sand and clay, and is chiefly devoted to grazing for dairy produce. The area of the township is 771 acres; rateable value, .£1,908; the population in 1891 was 224.

By Local Government Board Order a detached part of Dodcott-cum-Wilkesley was in 1888 added to Acton.
