Historical Description

AUDLEM is an ancient market town, parish and township, at the intersection of the roads between Nantwich and Market Drayton, in Shropshire and Newcastle (Staffordshire) and Whitchurch (Salop), and on the Shropshire Union Canal, with a station on the Crewe, Market Drayton and Wellington branch of the Great Western railway, 6 ½ miles south-east from Nantwich, 10 ½ from Crewe and 158 from London, on the borders of Shropshire and is in the Eddisbury division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division and union of Nantwich, county court district of Whitchurch (Salop), rural deanery of Nantwich and archdeaconry and diocese of Chester. The township is lighted with gas. The church of St. James is a massive structure chiefly in the Perpendicular style, with remains of Early English and Decorated work, and consists of chancel, clerestoried nave of six bays, south porch and a low tower with turreted pinnacles at the angles, and containing a clock and 6 bells: there are several monuments and five stained windows: the church was restored in 1885 and affords 557 sittings. The register dates from the year 1557. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £515, net yearly value £274, with 2 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Chester, and held since 1896 by the Rev. James Stapleton Cotton. There is a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1862, Primitive Methodist erected in 1871, Primitive Methodist Jubilee chapel, Cox bank, erected in 1861, and a Baptist chapel, erected in 1840. The cemetery of two acres, opened in 1874, has two mortuary chapels and is managed by the Parish Councils in the ecclesiastical parish of Audlem. In the Market place is an ornamental lamp, erected by public subscription at a cost of about £200, to the memory of Richard Baker Bellyse, who for 40 years practised as a surgeon, in this town. A market is held every Thursday, and the Audlem Wakes, a kind of fancy fair, with various amusements, in October. Ralph Boulton, in the reign of James I. left a rent-charge of £6 yearly to be distributed as follows:-six great loaves of bread to be given to the most aged and poorest of the workmen in the township every Sunday and 8s. for a church warden’s dinner. The charities for Audlem include about £20 for distribution in bread and clothing, and £22 to be given in money; besides about £21 for apprenticing and £8 for clothing, distributed in 4s. tickets to 40 poor persons from Wetenhall’s charities; Samuel Hayward in 1863 left £200, invested in Consols, the interest of which to be distributed on St. Thomas’ day amongst widows and widowers over 60 years of age: at Brown’s Bank is a small farm, yielding an annual rental of £18, which is distributed to the deserving poor on St. Thomas’ day: the township of Buerton has Holbrook’s gift, providing £12 10s. for ten 6d. loaves to be given away on Sundays for bread; there are also three charities for Dodcott-cum-Wilkesley township, producing about £19 a year, which is distributed in money and bread. The interest of £100, subscribed about 1873 to replace lost charities, is distributed to poor persons on St. Thomas’ day. The Earl of Kilmorey is lord of the manor and principal landowner. There are several other small owners. The soil is light; subsoil, various, with some sand. The chief crops are corn, wheat, barley, turnips &c. The area of the ecclesiastical parish is 11,448 acres; township, 2,327 acres of land and 21 of water; rateable value, £7,457 of the township; the population in 1891 was-township, 1,371. By Local Government Board Order a detached part of Audlem, known as Coole Farm, was in 1888 annexed to Hankelow.

Free Grammar founded & endowed by Ralph Bolton & Thomas Gammull in the 17th century; the latter, by will dated January 23rd, 1642, bequeathed the sum of £500, & Ralph Bolton, by will in 1648, gave £465 13s. 4d. to the Merchant Taylor’s Company upon trust to pay £20 yearly towards the support of this school; these two sums, together with the interest of £40 left by the Rev. William Evans, constitute the whole of the endowment, which in 1889 passed into the hands of the Charity Commissioners, & the trust is now managed by a body of governors, of which Joseph H. Bellyse esq. is the chairman.

Parochial, erected in 1868 & enlarged in 1876, for 200 children; average attendance, 74 boys, 68 girls, 60 infants.

Part of the township of Dodcott-cum-Wilksley and a small part of the township of Newhall are in the parish; the remainder of the latter is in the parish of Wrenbury.
