Historical Description

BACKFORD (i.e. the brook ford) is a parish and township on the Shropshire Union canal, and on the road from Chester to Birkenhead, 1 mile north-east of Mollington railway station on the London and North Western and Great Western joint railways, and 3 ½ north from Chester, in the Wirral division of the county, partly in the higher division of the hundred of Wirral and partly in the lower division of the hundred of Broxton, petty sessional division of Chester Castle, Chester union and county court district, rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of Chester. The church of St. Oswald is an ancient building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 6 bells and a striking clock, erected in 1887 by B. Glegg esq. of Backford Hall, in memory of Col. E. H. Glegg: the chancel dates from the 14th century: the tower from the 15th: the nave, poorly rebuilt in red brick, was entirely restored in 1879 and in 1890, and adorned with wall paintings by Mr. Edward Frampton, of London: the total sum spent upon the church since 1878 has exceeded £4,000: chained to an oak desk, given by Miss Massey of The Dale, is a bible in black latter, dated 1617: there are various mural tablets, including one to the Rev. Robert Denson, vicar of this parish, dated 1750, and another to the Rev. Samuel Griffiths D.D. late vicar of Avington, dated 1796: in 1885 a memorial window was erected to the late Rev. Canon George Becker Blomfield M.A. (d. 1885) and in 1893 a memorial window was erected by Mrs. Blomfield, of Mollington hall, to her sister, Miss Margaretta Dorothea Feilden: the east window, representing scenes from the life of our Saviour, is a memorial to Elizabeth and John Feilden and Allen Clayton: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1562. The living is a vicarage, tithe rent-charge £300, average £222, net yearly value £220, with 21 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Chester, and held since 1877 by the Rev. Richard John Fairclough M.A. late scholar of Christ’s College, Cambridge and surrogate. The charities for distribution, partly derived from a house and 6a. 2r. 32p. of land, amount to about £25 per annum. Backford Hall is a mansion of red brick in the Elizabethan Gothic style, standing at a short distance from the church and is the seat of Birkenhead Glegg esq. lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is sandy, clayey and loamy; the subsoil, marl. The chief crops are oats, wheat and potatoes. The area of the township is 755 acres of land and 9 of water; rateable value £1,599; the population in 1891 was-parish 523; township 137.

National School (mixed), with a yearly endowment from Carter’s and Welsby’s charities: the school was enlarged in 1894 for 114 children; average attendance, 65.
