Historical Description

BARNTON is a township and scattered village, and with the township of Anderton was formed into a parish in 1843 from the civil parish of Great Budworth; it is on the river Weaver, over which there is a swing bridge, and is 2 ½ miles north-west from Northwich station on the Cheshire Lines and London and North Western railways, in the Northwich division of the county, hundred of Bucklow, petty sessional division of Leftwich, county court district and union of Northwich, rural deanery of Frodsham and archdeaconry and diocese of Chester. The North Staffordshire canal passes through two tunnels here, at an elevation of 50 feet above the river. The village is supplied with water from works in the adjoining parish of Little Leigh. Christ church, erected in 1842, is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, and a western bell cot containing one bell: there are 300 sittings, 180 of which are free. The register dates from the year 1842. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £195, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Chester, and held since 1877 by the Rev. Samuel Lancaster Laidman L.Th, of Durham University, and surrogate. The Wesleyan chapel was built in 1875, and the Free Methodist chapel erected in 1867: there is also a Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1895. The chief landowners are John Highfield esq. of Cogshall Hall, Percy Trower Bence esq. Henry Jackson Whitley esq. Right Hon. A. H. Smith-Barry M.P. and Brunner, Mond and Co. of Winnington. A salt mine was formerly worked here, and rope-making is carried on. The soil is clayey; the subsoil, clay and sand. The chief crops are wheat, oats and potatoes. The area of the township is 715 acres of land and 45 of water; rateable value, £10,301; the population in 1891 was, parish, 2,297; township, 2,666.
