Historical Description

BARROW is a parish and township, comprising the villages of Great and Little Barrow, pleasantly seated about half a mile north of the old road from London to Chester and Holyhead, with a station on the Chester, Northwich and Altrincham section of the Cheshire Lines Committee’s railway, 183 miles from London, 4 ½ east-north-east from Chester, 6 north-west from Tarporley, 6 south from Frodsham, and 36 south-west from Manchester, in the Eddisbury division of the county, Tarvin union, Chester county court district, petty sessional division of Eddisbury, second division of Eddisbury hundred and rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of Chester. The church of St. Bartholomew is in part an ancient building of red sandstone, in the Early English style, and consists of chancel, with vestry on the north side, nave of four bays, north aisle, south porch, and a western tower surmounted at the angles by four stone urns, and containing a clock presented in 1876 by Major Jn. Stevens Clark, late 72nd Highlanders and one bell: the chancel was built in 1671, and the tower in 1744: the porch was added in 1837: there is an octagonal font, placed in 1713: the stained east window was erected in 1883 by Hugh Lyle Smyth esq. in memory of Eliza, his wife, and there is another, also placed by him in 1895, to the memory of his three daughters, Ethel, Kathleen and Dorothy: the church was completely restored in 1883, at a cost of about £3,000, and affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1513. The living is a rectory, net yearly value from tithe rent-charge £275, with about 2 acres of land and residence, in the gift of the Marquess of Cholmondeley, and held since 1890 by the Rev. Henry Abel Arnold M.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge. There is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel. The charities, for distribution in money, amount to £7 4s. 7d. yearly. The Marquess of Cholmondeley is lord of the manor and principal owner. The soil is in some parts of a heavy and clayey nature; in others, light, and sandy. The land is principally occupied for grazing purposes, and much cheese is made. The area is 3,022 acres of land and 11 of water; rateable value, £5,645; the population in 1891 was 734.
