Historical Description

BICKERTON is a township and parish, formed in 1843 from the civil parish of Malpas, 2 miles south-east from Broxton station on the Chester and Whitchurch section of the London and North Western railway and 4 north-by-east from Malpas, in the Eddisbury division of the county, Broxton hundred, petty sessional division of Broxton, union and county court district of Nantwich, rural deanery of Malpas and archdeaconry and diocese of Chester. The houses lie scattered at the base of a lofty range of hills. The parish includes Bickerton, Broxton, Bulkeley, Duckington, Egerton and Larkton. The church of the Holy Trinity, erected in 1843, is a plain building of stone consisting of chancel, nave, west porch and a western turret containing one bell: the church affords 180 sittings. The register dates from the year 1844. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £208, net yearly value £303, with residence, in the gift of T. W. Tyrwhitt-Drake esq. and held since 1879 by the Rev. James Melville Hall M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. A cemetery of about one acre was formed in 1880 on land adjoining the church: it is under the control of a burial board of 9 members. Done’s charity of £5 yearly and Nevill’s dole of £4 13s. 6d. yearly are distributed in accordance with a scheme of the Charity Commissioners for Malpas Rectorial charities. Capt. Sir Philip Henry Brian Grey-Egerton bart. of Oulton Park, Tarporley, who is lord of the manor, the Marquess of Cholmondeley and George Barbour esq. of Bolesworth Castle, are the principal landowners. The soil is heavy; subsoil, clay. The land is chiefly in pasture, but wheat is grown. The area of the township is 1,693 acres; rateable value, £2,359; the population in 1891 was: parish 1,274 & township, 335.
