Historical Description

BIDSTON-CUM-FORD is a parish, township and village, 3 miles north-west from Birkenhead and one mile south-west from the Dock station on the Wirral railway, in the Wirral division of the county and lower division of the hundred of Wirral, unions of Wirral and Birkenhead, county court district of Birkenhead, petty sessional division of Wirral, rural deanery of Birkenhead and archdeaconry and diocese of Chester. There is a station in the village on the Wirral railway, opened in March, 1896. The church of St. Oswald, rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, in 1856, is a building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, added in 1882, nave of five bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing 6 bells: there are some curious emblems and shields over the west door shewing the connection of the place with the Stanley family, one exhibiting the arms of the Isle of Man: there is a memorial window to the late Rev. C. A. Graham B.A. thirty years perpetual curate and rector, d. 1881, besides several others, and a fine reredos of glass mosaic by Salviati, depicting “The Last Supper” after Leonardo da Vinci; the marble mosaic chancel floor and the chancel fittings were presented by H. S. Bower esq. in memory of his wife, d. 1886: in the wall of the north aisle is a memorial wreath inscribed “A mark of affection from Victoria R. and I. to Percy E. L. Cust, page of honour, obt. 24 Nov. 1884:” there are 330 sittings. The registers date from the year 1579. The living is a rectory, gross yearly value £200, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Chester, and held since 1881 by the Rev. John Findlay Buckler M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge, Head Diocesan inspector of schools and surrogate. On the summit of Bidston hill is an observatory, built in 1771 and belonging to Mersey Docks and Harbour Board, with a resident observer; and near it is a lighthouse. The charities for distribution in bread and money amount to about £8 yearly, including Jeffrey’s, founded by will in 1847, but others by various donors have been lost. Robert Charles de Grey Vyner esq. is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is light sandy; subsoil, old sandstone. The chief crops are grass. The entire area of the parish is 3,862 acres; township, 1,712 acres; rateable value of township, £5,065; the population in 1891 was-parish, 2,139; township, 254.

Bidston Court, the residence of B. W. Hudson esq. was completed for the present owner and occupier about 1894, and is a strikingly picturesque mansion in the black and white timber-framed style peculiar to this county, from the designs of Messrs. Grayson and Ould, architects, of Liverpool.

National School, erected with residence for the master in 1838, & enlarged & new class-room added in 1884, for 140 children; average attendance, 65; supported partly by an endowment of £17 179. 4d. yearly & voluntary subscriptions.
