Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
BOSLEY is a township, village and parish, constituted in 1858 out of Prestbury and formed into a district chapelry Feb. 16, 1883 with a station on the Churnet Valley branch of the North Staffordshire railway, 6 miles couth from Macclesfield, 17 ½ north-east from Stoke-on-Trent, 7 from Leek, 5 east-north-east from Congleton and 163 from London, in the Macclesfield division of the county, petty sessional division of Prestbury, Macclesfield hundred, union and county court district, and in the rural deanery and archdeaconry of Macclesfield and diocese of Chester. The church of St. Mary, originally Norman, is a small edifice of brick, rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, in 1777, and consisting of Chancel (added in 1834), nave, and an ancient and low embattled tower containing 4 bells: a new organ, the gift of Joseph) Stubbs esq. was placed in the church in 1879: the brass lectern was presented by Mrs. Peel, of the Manor House, in memory of her husband, Charles Peel esq. who died 18 July, 1889: the stained east window is a memorial to Mrs. Sarah Sutcliffe, d. 24 Jan. 1859, and was erected by her husband, the Rev. William Sutcliffe M.A. incumbent of this parish (1833—70): there are three other stained windows in the nave, and a mural tablet to John Williams Nowell esq. of Macclesfield, d. 21 Dec. 1837: the church was restored and reseated in 1878 and affords 250 sittings. The registers date from the year 1728. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £92, net £90, with 35 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the vicar of Prestbury, and held since 1891 by the Rev. George Edward O’Brien M.A. of Queen’s College, Oxford. The Wesleyan school-room, built in 1832, is also used for divine service. There is a charity of 30s. yearly for distribution in bibles; Dawson and Thornley’s, of £2 7s. 4d. for distribution in money and bibles in Bosley and the neighbourhood and Roger Holland’s, of £5 yearly, due on St. Thomas’ day, being a charge on Hunter’s Pool Farm at Mottram St. Andrew. A fine sheet of water, covering 120 acres, is used as a reservoir for the Macclesfield canal. The township contains 3,077 acres of land and 120 of water, all the property of the Earl of Harrington, who is lord of the manor. Rateable value, £4,885; the population in 1891 was 364.
National School (mixed), built with residence for the master in 1858 & is now (1896) being enlarged for 90 children; average attendance, 66.
