Historical Description

CHEADLE is a populous, town, township and parish, with stations on the London and North Western and Cheshire Lines railways, 3 miles south-west from Stockport, 7 south-south-east from Manchester, and 5 east from Altrincham, in the Altrincham division of the county, Macclesfield hundred, Stockport petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Stockport, archdeaconry of Macclesfield and diocese of Chester.

A Local Board of Health for part of Cheadle township and Gatley was formed by Local Government Board Order No. 20,464, August 2, 1886, but under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 & 57 vict c. 73) an Urban District Council has been established.

The church of St., Mary, rebuilt at the beginning of the 16th century, is a battlemented edifice of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of four bays, aisles, north and south chapels, south porch, and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 8 bells: the stained west window in the tower was presented in 1880 by Egerton Macdona esq. son of the late rector; the roofs of the nave and aisles are of oak, and the chancel is fitted with carved oak stalls: in the Hanford chancel is a large altar-tomb of the 15th century, with two recumbent effigies of knights in rich plate armour representing two members of the Hanford family: one is bareheaded, the head of the other rests on a helmet encircled by a wreath: here also is another altar-tomb inscribed to Sir Thomas Brereton bart. of Handforth, ob. 7 Jan. 1673, and to the, Hon. Theodosia (Ward), his wife; on the upper slab is a recumbent effigy of the knight in plate armour; on the side of the tomb are shields of arms of the Brereton and Ward families, and at the end another shield impaling both coats: in the Moseley chancel are monuments to Humphrey Bulkeley esq. ob. Sep. 1678, and to Bertie Parkland esq. d. 20 May, 1817: in the, chancel proper are memorials to two former rectors, the Revs. Roger Royston, d. 1723; Edward Poole, d. 22 Sep. 1772, and to the Rev. W. H. Prescot, of Bradshaw Hall, d. 16 Nov. 1842, and there are others to the Kelsalls of Bradshaw, 1675—1745: the church was restored during the years 1878—80, at a cost of about £10,000, under the direction of Mr. James Medland Taylor, architect, of Manchester, and affords 600 sittings, all free at the evening service. The registers date from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £487; gross yearly value, £500; net £475, with 6 acres of glebe and residence in the gift of Sir H. D. Broughton, bart. and held since 1883 by the Rev. Frederick Augustus Macdona B.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. St. Cuthbert’s chapel of ease at Cheadle Heath, erected in 1887, is a structure of brick, consisting of chancel, nave, vestry and organ chamber; it affords 200 sittings, and is under the control of the rector of Cheadle. The Wesleyan chapel, built in 1865, is of brick, and will seat 150. The Congregational chapel, in Massie street, is a building of stone in the Gothic style, seating about 350. The Primitive Methodist chapel, at Cheadle Heath, is also of brick, and was erected in 1855. The Methodist New Connexion chapel, at Cheadle Heath, erected in 1883, is an iron structure, and will seat 250. Cheadle wakes commence on the first Sunday after the 18th September. Dunn’s charity of £6 13s. 4d. yearly, founded by will in 1839, is for clothing. The Barnes Convalescent Hospital, established in 1874, in connection with the Manchester Infirmary, has 136 beds, and is supported by voluntary contributions. The Literary Institute, erected in 1877 by public subscription, at a cost of about £2,000, contains a large public hall, 50 by 32 feet, library, news room, billiard, chess and recreation rooms and a gymnasium. James Watts esq. is lord of the manor. Robert Bamford-Hesketh esq. of Gwyrch Castle, Abergele, the trustees of the late Col. James H. Deakin (d. 1880), the Rev. Oldfield Kelsall Prescot M.A. of Bournemouth, J. E. Platt and James Watts esqs. are the principal landowners. The soil is various; subsoil, partly gravel and clay. The chief crops are potatoes and turnips. The joint area of the Urban Council district is 5,812 acres; rateable value £66,917; the population in 1891 was 8,252, including 156 in the Barnes Convalescent Hospital. The area of the township is 4,467 acres of land and 37 of water; rateable value, £55,481; the population in 1891 was 16,830.
