Historical Description

CHRISTLETON is a parish in the unions of Tarvin and Chester; the township is 2 ¼ miles south-east from Chester, in the Eddisbury division of the county, lower division of Broxton hundred, petty sessional division of Chester Castle, Chester union and county court district, and rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of Chester. The Shropshire Union Canal passes through the village. The church of St. James the Apostle is an edifice of local red sandstone and white Stourton stone, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of five bays, with aisles, transepts, south porch and an embattled western tower, rebuilt in 1530, but much damaged by the Royalist garrison of Chester in 1645, and restored in 1678: in 1877 it was heightened, and contains a clock and 8 bells: the rest of the church wag rebuilt of brick in 1738, and again rebuilt in 1876—7, of red sandstone, from designs by Mr. W. Butterfield, architect. The pulpit, of oak and walnut, on a base of polished Devonshire marble, and designed by Mr. Butterfield, was presented in 1877 by Mrs. Ince, of Christleton Hall, in memory of her husband, Townsend Ince, esq. D.L. d. 1871: the font is of Derbyshire fossil and Sicilian marbles: the stained west window was given in memory of Theodosia Fanny Lace (d. 1877), by her husband, brothers and sisters, and there is a memorial window erected by his Honour Judge William Wynne Ffoulkes M.A. to his, youngest daughter, Amy Elizabeth Margaret, d. 1883, and a third placed by Major J. St. John Hartford to Frances Catherine, his wife, d. 1886: the church is fitted with open oak benches, seating about 400 persons. The register dates from the year 1660. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge, £473, net yearly value, £398, including 60 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Henry Garnett esq. of Wyreside, near Lancaster, and held since 1869 by the Rev. Lionel Garnett B.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford. The rectory house was rebuilt in 1870. There is a Congregational chapel, and a Wesleyan chapel erected in 1888. Four almshouses, in the old Cheshire half-timbered style, from designs by Mr. J. Oldrid Scott F.S.A, were built in the year 1868 by the late Mrs. James Dixon, of Littleton, in memory of her son, James Dixon. A sum of £100 was left by the late James Dixon esq. of Littleton, who died in 1866, the interest to be used at the discretion of the rector for the benefit of the poor of the parish. The poor’s money, amounting to £2 5s. is distributed in money. The Workmen’s Club was founded in 1871 and has now (1896) 50 members; the premises comprise reading and billiard rooms; it is managed by a working committee, subject to the approval of the permanent committee of 12 old members; sec. working committee, John Dutton; sec. permanent committee, John Jones. George Cooper esq. of Manchester, who is lord of the manor, Mrs. Townsend Ince and the Duke of Westminster K.G. are the principal landowners. The soil is strong clay and sandy; the subsoil is clayey and marly. The chief crops are wheat, oats and potatoes. A considerable quantity of cheese is made in the parish. The area of the township is 1,492 acres of land and. 10 of water; rateable value, £5,975; the population in 1891 was-parish, 1,264; township, 902. By Local Government Board Order a farm house at Eggbridge in this township, was in 1888 added to Waverton.
