Historical Description

GRAPPENHALL is a village, township and parish; the village is 1 mile south-east from Latchford station on the Stockport and Warrington section of the London and North Western railway, and south-east from Warrington, in the Knutsford division of the county, Bucklow hundred, petty sessional division of Daresbury, Buncorn union and Warrington county court district, rural deanery of Frodsham West and archdeaconry and diocese of Chester. The Bridgewater canal, now the property of the Manchester Ship Canal Company, intersects the township. The church of St. Wilfrid, mentioned in Domesday Book, and rebuilt in 1539, is a building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of seven bays, aisles, transepts, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 6 bells: the font, of Norman, if not earlier date, had been buried under the nave floor, but was recovered at the time of the restoration of the church and then repaired and re-set: in the church is a recumbent cross-legged stone effigy in chain armour representing Sir William Fitz-William le Boydel kt. ob. c. 1275; the figure was restored and an inscription on brass placed relating to it in 1875; there is another brass inscription, placed, in 1876, to Sir Thomas Danyers kt. of Bradley in Appleton, who fought at Crecy, 25 May, 1346, and there captured the Count de Tankerville; there are many mural monuments to the Bower (1780—1830), Dakin (1728—1837) and Hall (1782—1810) families, to Murdo Grant, lieut. R.N. 1759, and to the Rev. Edmund Taylor, ten years rector here, d. 10 May, 1786, and Catherine, his wife, d. 1788: the church was restored in 1873—4, at, a cost of nearly £500, and affords 400 sittings, all free except four pews in the Boydell chapel belonging to J. C. Parr esq. of the Heys.

The register dates from 1574. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £353, net yearly value, £482, with 17 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Sir Gilbert Greenall bart. and held since 1892 by the Rev. Richard Greenall M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford. There is an independent Methodist chapel in Chester road, erected in 1881, and seating 200. Tanning is carried on here. Johnson’s charity, a rent-charge of £7 yearly, is for clothing, which is distributed on Easter Tuesday: a sum of about £12, the rent of three fields in Appleton, is for school expenses. The Heys, the seat of Joseph Charlton Parr esq. J.P. is a mansion pleasantly seated in a park of 150 acres. Grappenhall Hall, the seat of Mrs. Greenall, is a modern house surrounded by a park of 30. acres. The Right Hon. Arthur Hugh Smith-Barry P.C., M.P. of Fota Island, Queenstown, who is lord of the manor, Joseph Charlton Parr esq. and Mosley Leigh esq. of Hartford, are the chief landowners. The soil is light; the subsoil is sand. The chief crops are oats, wheat and potatoes. The area of the township is 1,597 acres of land and 13 of water; rateable value, £6,561; the population in 1891 was 984.

National Endowed School (mixed), built in 1846, for 120 children; average attendance, 98; the school is endowed with £11 from Johnson’s charity.
