Historical Description

HANDLEY is a township, parish and village on the main road from Chester to Whitchurch, 1 ¼ miles east from Tattenhall station, and 3 ½ south from the Waverton station, both on the Shrewsbury and Chester section of the London and North Western railway, and 7 ½ south from Chester, in the Eddisbury division of the county, higher division of Broxton hundred, Tarvin union, Chester county court and petty sessional division, rural deanery of Malpas and archdeaconry and diocese of Chester. The church of All Saints is ah edifice of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, and an embattled western tower dating from 1512 and containing 4 bells. There is a mural monument to John Edge, of Golbourne-David, of 1684 and to Elizabeth his wife of 1704 and a brass, to Thomas Venables, of 1572: in the nave is a memorial window to Samuel Sandbach, jun. esq. of Handley (d. 1849), erected by his widow: the church was restored in 1854 a cost of £544, and further between 1858 and 1866 at a cost of £94; and in 1891 the chancel and vestry were restored at an expense of between £300 and £400: there are 144 sittings. The register dates from the year 1570. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £189, net yearly value £155, with 10 ½ acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Chester, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Arthur Frederick Ostrehan B.A. of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. There is a Wesleyan chapel here, built in 1862, and enlarged in 1875. A stone quarry is worked in this towsnhip. The charities are of £2 yearly value. Calveley Hall, the ancient seat of the family of that name, is now occupied as a farmhouse, but contains a fine oak staircase and several wainscoted apartments. Samuel Henry Sandbach esq. of Cherry Hill, Malpas, who is lord of the manor; Janat Wynne Denton M.D. of Newbold Chester; the trustees of the Whitchurch poor, and Mrs. Beck are the chief landowners. The, soil is clayey; the subsoil chiefly clay; the land is chiefly pasture. The area of the township is 1,351 acres; rateable value, £2,305; the population of the township in 1891 was 281; ecclesiastical parish, 355.

National School (mixed), built in 1841, for 72 children; average attendance, 49; it is supported in part by an endowment of £6 yearly, paid by the trustees of the late Samuel Sandbach esq. & there is a house for the mistress.
