HESWALL-CUM-OLDFIELD, on the estuary of the Dee, is a pleasant village and township, with a station on the West Kirby branch of the London and North Western and Great Western joint railways, and is about 9 miles south-west-by-south from Birkenhead. The church of St. Peter, entirely rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, in 1879, is an edifice of stone in mixed styles, with a tower of the 14th or 15th century, and consists of chancel, clerestoried nave of six bays, aisles, vestry, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells: in 1894 a side chapel was added as a memorial to the daughter of Thomas Brocklebank esq.; it is completely fitted for daily services and is enclosed by a wrought iron screen: there are several monuments to the Glegg family of the 17th and 18th centuries, including one with effigy to John Glegg esq. temp. Jas. I.; another to Catherine, wife of Edw. Glegg esq. ob. 20 Aug. 1666; and a third to Sir William Glegg kt. ob. 9 Nov. 1758, and various inscribed tablets: there are also nine memorial windows: the church affords 550 sittings. The register dates from the year 1539. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £212, net yearly value £200, with residence and 30 acres of glebe, in the gift of W, Bromley-Davenport esq. M.P. and held since 1890 by the Rev. Thomas Henry May M.A., S.C.L. of Worcester College, Oxford, and surrogate. The Centenary Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1891 at a cost of £1,450, is of red sandstone in the Late Decorated style, from plans by Mr. Thomas W. Cubbon, architect, Birkenhead, and will seat 350 persons. A violent thunderstorm occurred here during divine service on the evening of Sunday, 19 Sept. 1875, and the tower being struck by lightning, the organist and one other person were killed instantaneously. William Bromley-Davenport M.P., J.P. of Capesthorne, and the trustees of Lloyd’s are lords of the manor and principal landowners, but there are also several small landowners. The soil varies from sand to stiff clay. The area of the township is 1,331 acres of land and 1,704 of foreshore; rateable value, £6,487; the population in 1891 was parish, 1,409; township, 1,210.
