Apethorne is on the Peak Forest Canal, to the west of Gee Cross and about a mile south of Hyde. The labouring population are principally employed in the cotton mills of The Apenthorne Mills Company Limited. At Gibraltar, a little to the north on the banks of the Tame, are the cotton mills of the Gibraltar Mill Company, also employing a large number of hands.
