Historical Description
INCE is a parish and a compact village, to the south of the Manchester Ship Canal, which runs through the parish along the south bank of the Mersey, with a station on the Hooton and Helsby section of the London and North Western and Great Western joint railway, and is 8 miles north-north-by-east from Chester and 6 west from Frodsham, in the second division of Eddisbury hundred, Eddisbury division of the county, Chester union and county court district, petty sessional division of Chester Castle, and rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of Chester. The church of St. James the Great, standing on high ground, is an edifice of red sandstone, in the Gothic style, restored in 1854 at a cost of £3,400, defrayed by the late Mrs. Park, and consists of chancel, nave of five bays, north aisle, south porch, and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 3 bells the tower and chancel date from the 14th century: the nave and north aisle were built in 1854: there are brasses with inscriptions in Latin to Samuel John Hardware, 1701; John Wright, 1706; Sara, wife of Richard Holt, 1706; and Dorothea, wife of Richard Beilis, 1708. In the chancel is an oak chair dated 1634, with carving representing the “Adoration of the Magi”; the brass candelabrum was the gift of Sir George Wynne bart. lord of the manor in 1724: the east window is stained, and the church affords 254 sittings. The original registers were for some time lost, but one book containing records of births, deaths and marriages between 1682 and 1772, which has every appearance of being genuine, was recovered by the Rev. Charles S. Upperton M.A. late vicar (1867—86). The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £245, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late E.W. Park Yates esq. and held since 1892 by the Rev. Edwd. Charley M.A. of Trinity College, Oxford. Ince appears in Domesday Book as one of the thirteen religious establishments belonging to the cathedral church of St. Werburgh, Chester, and was one of the manors which passed, after the Dissolution, into the hands of Sir Richard Cotton, thence to Sir Hugh Cholmondeley, from whom it was purchased by Sir George Wynne, bart. of Leeswood, Flintshire, who died 25 April, 1743; Margaret, his daughter and co-heiress, brought the estate in marriage to Richard Hill Waring esq. of the Hayes, Salop, from whose family the Whole estate, comprising 1,615 statute acres, and including the impropriation of the great tithes and patronage of the curacy, was purchased about 1800 by Robert Peel and Edmund Yates esqrs. for £80,000, the latter subsequently becoming possessor of the whole. There are some traces here of monastic buildings, now converted into a farmhouse and barn. Two sides of the quadrangle are in a fairly good state of preservation and the Hall is now used as a barn and contains eight large bay windows. Ince Hall, the seat of Mrs. Park Yates, was erected in 1849, and is a mansion of white freestone in the Italian style, standing in a park of 69 acres, and approached from the road by a lodge and a drive nearly a mile in length. The soil is sandy; subsoil, marl; the chief crops are wheat, oats and potatoes. The area is 1,731 acres of land, 266 tidal water and 3,784 foreshore; rateable value, £4,303; the population in 1891 was 318.
National School (mixed & infants), built in 1869, for 100 children; average attendance, 75; supported mainly by Mrs. Park Yates, & assisted by Government grant.
