The Lymm Water Company was authorised by Act of Parliament in 1874 for the supply of the united parishes of Lymm and Oughtrington: the pumping station and works are at the north end of Lymm Lake, in the picturesque valley known as the Dingle, lying between the lake and the ancient corn mill of the village: the works originally consisted of a well and boring with tunnels driven a considerable distance into the new Ted sandstone rock, the pumps being driven by a turbine with water from the lake above, and by an auxiliary steam engine and pumps in duplicate, the water being pumped to a height of 180 feet into a cylindrical iron tank of 56,000 gallons capacity in an octagonal stone tower, about 70 feet high and 30 in diameter, erected on an eminence a quarter of a mile east from the pumping station, and thence distributed over the district. These works were extended In 1889—90 by sinking two deep borings of 18 inches diameter and 250—and 300 feet deep respectively, enlarged pumps and steam engines being provided, and a low level reservoir of 100,1300 gallons capacity constructed near Pesmyhill; the low-lying districts are now served from this reservoir, the original tower providing for the more elevated sites; the quality of the Water is described as excellent but hard, as in the case with all water from the new red sandstone.
