Historical Description

MARPLE is a township, village and parish, formed May 9, 1876, from the civil parish of Stockport, and is near the Derbyshire border and on the Peak Forest and Macclesfield canal, with a junction station of the Midland railway and of the Manchester and Hayfield and Marple and Macclesfield sections of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire railway, 4 miles south-east from Stockport, 12 north from Macclesfield, in the Hyde division of the county, Macclesfield hundred, Stockport union, county court district and petty sessional division, rural deanery of Mottram, archdeaconry of Macclesfield and diocese of Chester. The village is lighted with gas from works at Ludworth, the property of the Urban Council.

A Local Board was established here, Jan. 26, 1875, but under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 & 57 Vict. c. 73), the township is now governed by an Urban District Council.

The church of All Saints, erected in 1878—80, at a cost of about £6,000, from designs by Mr. Medland Taylor, architect, of Manchester, and consecrated 30th June, 1880, is a building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of three bays and aisles and north-west porch: the stained east window was formerly in the chancel of the old church, and there are several others, an oak eagle lectern and a carved stone font: there are 634 sittings. The old church is now used as a mortuary chapel only. The register dates from the year 1655. The living is a vicar age, gross yearly value £300, net £290, with residence and 30 acres of glebe, in the gift of the rector of Stockport, and held since 1876 by the Rev. Reginald Samuel Adams M.A. of Caius. College, Cambridge. There are Congregational, Primitive Methodist, Wesleyan and Free Methodist chapels. Here is a county police station, with 1 sergeant and 2 constables. The Union Rooms in New road, erected in 1878, contain a reading room and library on the ground floor and a mission room on the upper floor, where divine service is held every Sunday morning and evening and on Wednesday and Saturday evenings, the services being conducted by Mr. George W. Millne. The Conservative Club in Church lane, erected in 1886, at a cost of about £1,800, is a structure of Ted brick. There is also, a Liberal Club. Charities:-Wright’s charity of £15 yearly is applied as follows: £5 in kind to the poor, £5 to the organist and choir master and £5 to provide an annual dinner to the Sunday school teachers; Barnes’s charity provides £8 a year for apprenticing, and there is £1 6s. for the clergy; the benefactions of John Sydebotham, Peter Low and Elias Agecroft, for the Free school, varying from £25 to £27 yearly, are now merged into one (under the management of trustees) and known as the “Marple Educational Charity;” the amount is annually distributed in money prizes, not exceeding £1 each, to children attending some public elementary school who shall have satisfied the trustees of their proficiency in religious knowledge in accordance with the doctrines of the Church of England.

There are five almshouses for five aged women, built in 1853 and endowed with £64 yearly by Mrs. Elizabeth Bridge, widow of the late John M. L. Bridge, of Manchester. Marple Hall, the seat of John Henry Bradshaw Isherwood esq .J.P. lord of the manor and chief landowner, is a fine mansion of stone, mantled with ivy, inclosing a square court. The soil is sandy; subsoil, clay, gravel and rook. The chief crops are potatoes, but the land is chiefly pasture. The area of the township is 2,988 acres of land and 65 of water; rateable value, £27,219; the population in 1,891 was in the township and urban district, 4,844; the population of the ecclesiastical parishes in 1891 was All Saints, 2,576 and St. Martin, 1,266.

Low Marple is an ecclesiastical parish formed in 1870 from the civil parish of Stockport and within the township of Marple. The church of St. Martin, erected in 1870 from designs by Mr. John D. Sedding, architect, is in the Gothic style, and consists of chancel, nave, side chapel, south porch and a western turret containing 2 bells: the east and west windows are stained: the chancel is divided from the nave by a handsome oak screen, surmounted by a cross; and there is a brass eagle lectern and a stone font: a chapel was built on the north side in 1896, from designs by Mr. H. Wilson: the church has sittings for about 250 persons. The register dates from the year 1871. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £99, with residence, in the gift of Miss M. A. Hudson, and held since 1892 by the Rev. William Henry Hickson M.A. of Trinity College, Oxford. The population of the ecclesiastical parish in 1891 was 1,266.
