Historical Description
MARTON is a township, small village and parish, formed from that of Prestbury, on the Manchester and Birmingham road, 3 ½ miles north from Congleton station on the North Staffordshire railway and 6 south-west from Macclesfield, in the Knutsford division of the county, petty sessional division of Prestbury, hundred and union of Macclesfield, county court district of Congleton, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Macclesfield and diocese of Chester. The church of St. James, on the east side of the Congleton and Wilmslow road, and said to have been built by Sir John Davenport about 1343, is a curious half-timbered building, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a squab western, annexe or tower, with pyramidal roof, surmounted by a square turret with a low wooden spire and containing 3 bells: the east window is stained and in the tower are the recumbent stone effigies of two knights in armour, now much dilapidated, supposed to represent Sir John, Davenport, the reputed founder, and his son Sir Urian. In 1871 the church was thoroughly restored at a cost of £1,500, by the late Mrs. Barber, daughter of the late John Darcey, in memory of her family: there are 170 sittings. The register dates from the year 1889. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £93, net £65, in the gift of William Bromley-Davenport esq. M.P. and held since 1895 by the Rev. Richard Henry Pring B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. Marton Hall, the ancient seat of the Davenport family, is a half-timbered building, now serving as a farmhouse: the arms of the Davenports, curiously carved, still ornament one of the rooms, which is wainscoted with oak. William Bromley-Davenport esq. M.P. of Capesthorne, is lord of the manor and owner of the whole township, which is believed to have been in the possession of the Davenport family since about the year 1176. The township contains 2,194 acres; rateable value, £3,465; the population in 1891 was 290.
Gorseley Green, Pikelow and Mutlow are places here.
National School (mixed), for 60 children; average attendance, 44; it has an endowment of £13 17s. a year, derived from the Weatherby bequest of £525.
