Historical Description

MOBBERLEY is an extensive township, parish and village, with a station on the Cheshire Lines Committee'’s railway, one mile north from the village, and is 3 miles east-north-east from Knutsford, 6 south from Altrincham and 4 west from Wilmslow, in the Knutsford division of the county, petty sessional division and hundred and union of Bucklow, county court district of Altrincham, rural deanery of Bowdon, archdeaconry of Macclesfield and diocese of Chester. The ancient church of St. Wilfrid, built in the 13th century, on the site of an old Saxon church, is an edifice of stone in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of 4 bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, erected by Sir John Talbot, in 1533, and containing a clock and 6 bells: the nave and chancel are separated by a carved oak screen, made by Peter Alton, and bearing an inscription and the date 1500: the chancel, restored and furnished with handsome oak stalls by the family of the present rector in 1889—90, retains piscina and sedilia in excellent preservation: the stained east window is a memorial to the Rev. George Mallory M.A. for 53 years rector here, who died 26 July, 1885, and to whom a tablet has also been placed: the Teredos, erected by the family in 1894, a memorial to his widow and two daughters: and there are other marble tablets to Lawrence Blakiston, lieut. 62nd Regiment, son of Major Blakiston, of Mobberley New Hall, who fell at the assault on Sebastopol, 8 Sept. 1855; to the Rev. Henry Offley Wright, of Mottram St. Andrew, d. 17 June, 1799, and his wife Jane, d. March, 1779; and to the Rev. John Holdsworth Mallory M.A. a former patron and rector of this parish, d. 25 May, 1,832, and his wife Julia, d. 29 June, 1852; and a memorial window to Trafford Leigh Mallory R.N. d. 24 Aug. 1867: the church affords 493 sittings. The register dates from the year 1578. The living is a rectory, tithe rent-charge £600, average £456, gross yearly value £620, net £600, with 94 acres of glebe, in the gift of and held since 1885 by the Rev. Herbert Leigh Mallory M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. There are Congregational chapels at Pepper street and Knolls green, and a Wesleyan chapel in Faulkner lane. At the east side of the parish about one and a half miles from the church is a Quakers’ burial ground, with gravestones of the 17th century. Coppock’s charity of £10 yearly is for bread; Stubbs’ and Harley’s, gifts, together £2 as are distributed in money; Griffiths charity, producing £8 yearly, is devoted to the church schools. Mobberley Manor House, a good residence, now in the occupation of Arthur Lavington Payne esq. occupies the site of the Augustinian priory of SS. Mary and Wilfrid, founded in 1206 by Patrick de Modberley. Mobberley Old Hall, the residence of Ernest Gerard Leycester esq. B.A., LL.B., J.P. has some good oak panelled rooms, and a handsome staircase of the same material also remains. Mobberley Hall, the property of R. O. Leycester esq. of Toft Hall, Knutsford, and now in the occupation of Octavio Kissel esq. is a handsome mansion of stone about a mile east of the church. The principal landowners are Lord Egerton of Tatton, R. O. Leycester esq. of Toft Hall, and J. P. Legh esq. Rafe Oswald Leycester esq. and the rector are lords of the manor, The soil is various, but for the most part clay; the subsoil is clay. The chief crops are wheat, beans and oats. The area is 5,189 acres of land and 17 of water; rateable value, £11,592; the population in 1891 was 1,292 in the civil, and 1,226 in the ecclesiastical parish.

National Schools (mixed), near the church, built in 1838, & enlarged in 1881, for 220 children; average attendance, 119; it is endowed with about £9 13s. yearly.
