Historical Description

GREAT NESTON is a township and parish, on the south-west side of the, peninsula formed by the Dee, and the Mersey, with a station on the London and North Western and Great Western joint railway's branch line from Hooton to West Kirby, 11 miles from Birkenhead, 12 from Chester and 191 from London, in the Wirral division of the county, higher division of the hundred of Wirral, Birkenhead county court district, union of Wirral and petty sessional division of Wirral, rural deanery of Wirral and archdeaconry and diocese of Chester.

The“Local Government Act, 1858” (21 and 22 Vict, c, 98), was adopted by Great Neston and Pa.rk.gate, July 2, 1867, and the district governed by a Local Board, but under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” the present Urban District Council has been established.

The church of SS. Mary and Helen, given before 1182 to the abbot and convent, of St. Werburgh at Chester by Ralph de Montalt, re-built in 1876, at a cost of about £8,000, is an edifice of red sandstone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel opening into side chapels, clerestoried nave, aisles with eastern chapels, north and south porches and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 8 bells, hung in 1884: the tower, originally Norman, was rebuilt during the Perpendicular period: in the church are preserved some interesting Runic stones, carved with knot-work, and an ancient tombstone to an ecclesiastic: there are five memorial windows and numerous marble tablets: the font, dating from about 1490, is octangular, and both shaft and basin are panelled the church affords 750 sittings. The registers date from 1559, the portion from 1559—1650 consisting of parchment sheets. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £473, net yearly value £415, with residence and 5 ¼ acres of glebe, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Chester, and held since 1893 by the Rev. Edmund Clarke Turner M.A. of Caius College, Cambridge, hon. canon of Chester, and surrogate. There is also a Presbyterian church, built about 1885, and a mission hall. The Town Hall, High street, erected in 1887, at a cost of about £2,500, is a structure of brick, from designs by Mr. David Walker, architect, of Liverpool: the upper rooms are occupied by the offices of the Urban District Council and the Neston and District Literary Society; on the ground floor is a sub-branch of the North and South Wales Bank, rooms occupied by the Neston and District Literary Society and dub, and an assembly room seating about 400 persons. Wilcock’s, Hayes’s, Bond and Monk charities together produce £36 yearly for distribution. The cattle fairs, formerly held on February 2nd, May 29th and Sept. 29th, are now discontinued. Ashfield Hall, the seat of Harmood Banner esq. J.P. is a fine mansion of stone, commanding a good view of the river Dee and the Welsh, mountains; the grounds are beautifully laid out. John Johnson Houghton esq. of Westwood, Thornton-Hough, who is lord of the manor, Major Lord Edmund Bernard Talbot M.P., J.P. Miss Rathbone, and Charles John Bushell esq. J.P. of Bromborough, are the principal landowners. The soil is clay and sand; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, potatoes and turnips. The area of Great Neston township is 1,401 acres of land and 66 of water and 1,052 of foreshore; rateable value, £9,956: the population in 1891 was 2,240 in the township and 3,704 in the ecclesiastical parish; the population of the urban district in 1891 was 3,577.
